Sounds great I've played Crysis 2 a bit (didn't finish it) and was unimpressed to be honest. With community-driven mods it could be pretty great.

Especially if Gunsmith knows how to mod games

I don't know, will they be able to mod things like the original suit back into Crysis 2? Even if they did, the game isn't exactly balanced for it, and you can't do much about the linear levels without completely redesigning the game from the ground up. Also, while a recreation of the original Crysis/Warhead with Cryengine 3 might be interesting, it's a game I've already played several times and it still looks stunning in Cryengine 2, plus I'm not sure CE3 offers the same level of interaction and physics with in-game objects as CE2 does.

I'm not sure how much can be salvaged here TBH.

I would have thought the more interesting side to this would be new games, as opposed to mods for a game everybody will have forgotten about

Same here, don't care much about mods but rather looking forward to what games can be created with the engine

with source code access, this could seriously rival UDK.

Is it just me or does CE3 seem like a major step backwards from CE2?

This video shows what I'm on about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WJG14uLA3k
I know it's quite old, but I still think that the original Crysis is more impressive graphically than Crysis 2.

It is. What CE3 did was to add a blurriness and lights effects to mask the retrocess.

It probably is a step backwards, however, for small developpers etc this could be interesting as I think it makes it easier to code to consoles, which can't be bad news for indie developpers !

Either way offering a chance to play about with it for free as long as there is no commercial gain shouldn't be sniffed at

wouldn't creating assets for modern engines be way too time consuming or high level for indie devs or mod teams. I can't imagine the process to create a skeleton and models (let alone animation) for a cry engine characters, as opposed to old CS skins or player models.
