2nd screen

I'm moving into a new student house this October, and as my room is on the ground floor facing the street I think taking my shiny 24" screen is an invitation to robbery. What I'm looking for is a reasonable widescreen, probably something with a resolution around 1680*1050, that isn't very big and doesn't cost very much. 2nd hand and refurbished is where I'm looking, as this is a secondary monitor that I don't want to spend loads of money I don't have on Ideal budget is less than £50.

I've had a look at nrg_it's ebay page as that comes well recommended - anywhere else I should be looking, and any recommendations for the screen?

Edit: resolution perhaps not 1680*1050, that seems to only come with larger resolutions. Whatever is the next one down - 1440*900 perhaps?

I think you could look at the Dell 2007WF (standard) or 2007WFP (widescreen), the only problem is finding one you are sure is an IPS panel as they came with either LGPhillips' S-IPS or Samsung's S-PVA, the IPS being the much better of the two. See here for more information. Being only 20" and 4 years old you can often find one at a decent price.

As to ebay type refurb options, check out my post here. If you can stretch to £100 you can pick up a 2209WA from this guy (inc delivery if you ask nicely), it's a great e-IPS monitor and 22" is a very reasonable size, not quite your 24" but not so much smaller that it will annoy you. This one only came with the e-IPS panel so no worries on that front. Don't get the newer 2210 or 2211 though as they aren't as good but will probably cost you more!

Beyond that, staying with Dell you can always pick up a couple of standard 19" monitors (like the 1908 etc) for around £30 each and stick them side by side, not perfect but you get the same height as a 22" widescreen but more overall width. No IPS panels but as far as cheap monitors for real work go, not a bad option. I had two with a 2209 for a while.

Hope that helps a bit. I'm a dell man myself so maybe someone can give you good alternative advice.

Also, Goodbytes is your man, he knows all there is to know about monitors

EDIT:
Oh and with regards to resolution, for the 2209 and 2007WFP you are looking at 1680x1050.
