i5-2500k overclocking on MSI P67A-GD53 (B3) Motherboard

Good Evening,

Due to my lack on knowledge on overclocking on these motherboards even after reading the bit-tech guide, (which doesn't work on this specific board). I would like to get some help from somebody who knows what to do.

Currently I have only increased the multiplier to x45 and left everything else on auto.

My questions are currently on how to specifically work with the voltages on this board. How to make a stable overclock. Or does just leaving everything on auto and taking Turbo boost, Speed spectrum off work just as well?

Take the RAM speeds up to whatever it's rated for as well, then set the RAM volts to whatever the kit says to use at that speed.
Going higher than 4.5GHz will probably mean you'll need to set the CPU voltage manually at around 1.3-1.35V.

I just came here for exactly the same reason. I set up this PC in August, which is VERY hot where I am. I couldn't push the CPU clock past 4.3 GHz following the bit-tech guide (for the GD55, although I have a GD53).

Since it's gotten much colder recently, I tried to get it higher. I manage to go to 4.4 GHz without changing voltages. Any higher and I get blue screens or hangs. Now I'm stable at 4.5 GHz but I had to set voltages on "Auto", same as OP.

My question here, which I believe could (or should) concern the OP as well, is what voltages I should be watching and at what values should they be? I use speedfan events to beep when temperatures are high. What ranges should I set the voltages to for it to warn me (in case they drop too low)?

iniquix: Sorry if this counts as hijacking. It felt wrong to start a separate thread one day later for the same matter.

Don't use speedfan. Use Core Temp for one . Above may help slightly.

Thanks iniquix! I'll give that a try.
As for monitoring software: I've been torn between CoreTemp and SpeedFan for a while.
Coretemp is great because I get to see temps on the Logitech LCD while gaming, but SpeedFan won because I'm also worried about GPU temperatures (my old 8800 GT used to overhead quite often).

Use msi afterburner for fan speed increase on your gfx card.

I've also upp'd my RAM to DDr3 - 1600mhz from 1333mhz where do I find the voltages for my RAM - manufacturers website or?

I have another question after finally finding some stable results at 4.6ghz. When viewing cpu-z it sometimes drops down to 4.2ghz then back up.. any reason why? This is when I'm doing an Intelburn test

it is usually stated when purchasing the RAM the voltage it runs at.

What brand of RAM do you have?

And in future can you edit your last post instead of multi posting. Unless the post has been replied to.

I've found the stability at 1.64V's on the RAM just having issues with the drop down in the post above.

To anyone that didn't understand the first comment When looking at the Frequency it alternates in Core TEmp and in CUP-Z from 4200 x 42, to 4600 x 46. I have no idea why it's doing this steep step ECIS all Turbo boost is all off.

Usually the system downclocks to 1.6ghz I have the same cpu but not mb and mine does downloack, but to 1.6ghz I am not overclocked right now but dont have any settings on auto when ocing. it's usally not best practice!

I'm not sure, have you stopped any energy saving modes in bios?

Disabled energy saving and still getting the drop from 4.5ghz to 4.2ghz while running intelburn. Weird thing was last night I had a Mem Dump for a Prime95 test that run 20 levels on standard and high in intelburn. Never had that before.

Anyone got a clue what could be causing the slow down?

On top on that I can't find much info about this specific motherboard in terms on stable voltages unlike its big brother and asus counter-part. Anyone got any basics for a 4.5ghz overclock?

Oddly it should drop down to 1.6ghz as that is the none load speed it runs at. And max voltage you should be putting through the i5 2500k is 1.35v at least for a stable and not overly hot cpu

Have a look at the last 3 posts in this thread. He's describing the same issue as your having.

http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=146733.0

The suggested solution is to increase the short and long power limits.

As you can see from my sig I've got a 2500K at 4.7 on a p67a-gd65. I can post my settings if it'll help.

I'm running those as well, and you can leave the board at Auto, but raise the CPU VCore to about 1.3V for a nice stable CPU. You might be able to lower it a little, but 1.3V is still not going to be THAT

I had that problem when I upgraded bios to "1E". It seems that the latest bios is buggy. I flashed bios to older version "1D" and all is well. Here is the link.

Edit: Once you get bios fixed. Try this Overclocking guide. It is for the GD55, but is still relevant to your GD53. The settings show you how to hit 4.7Ghz. But obviously this depends on your CPU. Link: http://www.overclock.net/t/963798/ms...w-and-oc-guide

Ok after a lot of rubbish with this board (wish I'd gone for a different one now) and getting the newest bios 1.0F from Live Update. I've overclocked the CPU to 4.4ghz (currently) and done 2 runs on Intelburn, one standard and one on high. 10 runs each and system while slightly hotter then wanted is stable.

Current settings are CPU Core Voltage: 1.38 (to high will play around)
CPU I/O Voltage: Auto
DRAM Voltage: 1.6 (near as you can get)
System Agent voltage: Auto

All others are exactly the same as on http://www.overclock.net/t/963798/ms...w-and-oc-guide

Thank you to YEHBABY for the link it's been a big help.

Will do more testing and update the thread as I go.
