IP spoofing tool

My dad lives in Greece and is looking for a tool that will fool UK websites into thinking his IP address is UK based. He has talked about this before for gaining access to the BBC iplayer but it is a particular nuisance at this time of year when he wants to do his Christmas shopping online. He can browse sites such as Amazon UK but if he tries to buy anything it redirects him to the Greek Amazon store.

He has tried a couple of programs, one called Expat Shield and another called Tor but both have been spyware/adware and have caused numerous issues. Does anyone have any tool/packages they can recommend? Ease of use would be appreciated as he is in his 70's!

Have you tired seaching for open proxys in the UK.Before you take this suggestion allow other member to comment because i recall open proxy can be dangerous and track usage, info ie record data.Hopefully another member can clear that up.

The Tor network should be clean but can route you out of anywhere in the world.

A UK proxy would be a good bet.

Or get a VPN to a UK provider.

Both would be better than trying to spoof an IP

I was thinking the latter would be a better idea. Greece being the 3rd world country of Europe the only internet access he can get is through a 3G dongle and his download limit is 1Gb a month. The VPN services are all priced for much higher usage. Again any recommendations on providers are appreciated

If he just needs temp access you could give him remote access to a PC you have here :P

Find everything he wants on his connection, save links and visit through the remote access to buy.

The safest thing would be to set up a remote connection to your computer for him if any purchasing is going to be done. Proxy are good for general use, but since you have no way of knowing who is operating them, or what data they may collect it can be quite risky.
Look at Hamachi, it is pretty easy to use and does not require much beyond installing it and entering a couple pieces of information to allow them access to your pc.

Have you tried HotSpotShield? I used to use it to watch TV Shows on Hulu and it worked a charm. The only downside is that it somehow attaches advertisements to certain websites. It can be turned on/off when desired, which is a good thing.

Just google Hotspot shield and you will find it.

That is for him to worry about. He has a program which shows him how much data he has left so i think one program on iplayer will give him enough of a scare to stop!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will try and see if I can set up my FreeNAS box as a proxy.

[edit] I take it an Atom based PC would work for this? I have an Atom HTPC that would be perfect for this.[/edit]

The problem with setting up a proxy on your own connection is that the speed your dad can transfer data will be limited to your upstream speed not your downstream speed.

Other than that slight caveat, an Atom box should be more than enough grunt to act as a proxy - it's not really doing that much, just basic NAT.

Good point. It likely to bugger my pings when gaming too. I will give it a go and if he is happy I will educate him to only use it when he needs it and not route all his internet traffic through me.

The Tor network is volunteer run and has an open source client - if you encountered ad/spyware with that then you downloaded it from the wrong place. However, since demand far outstrips supply, it is slow and unsuitable for bandwidth intensive applications (plus leeching exessively off others' bandwidth is a bit of a no-no).

One alternative to consider is JAP - without payment you're restricted to a proxy in Dresden, Germany but if you pay for the commercial Jondo service, you have a choice of servers including one in the UK.
