Most likely since they won't have any plugs, they'll likely have plugs for bare speaker wire, which you could solder to a audio jack, but it'd be easier to use an amp.

Ok, so I found an amp. These speakers are rated to 75 watts RMS each, will this be too much for them?;
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Yamaha-Integ...0132321&sr=1-1 They are rated to 85 watts. Do you want an amp thats more powerful than the speakers, or less? (Wouldn't want to damage the speakers).

Yes that amp would be fine. But have a look on
What HiFi To get an idea what is best for your budget. It is a good yard stick. http://www.whathifi.com/review/q-acoustics-2020i If the amp has higher watts then the speakers then you have to be careful not to let any one turn up the volume all the way as that might damage your speakers.

Most speakers are actually damaged because someone turns up the volume on an amplifier that's not powerful enough, not vice versa.

Don't worry about specifications, those speakers will run fine with the amp you mention, claimed power output and ratings are pretty useless indicators.
If you could get an amp with a digital input for sensible money you may get better performance from your sound cards digital output.

As a rule of thumb, you should choose an amp with a power rating that is 1.5 - 2 times the rated power of the speakers.

As Dead Beat says. Get an amp with around 120-140 watts on each channel. If you cannot find any new ones within your budget, try searching for used amplifiers. Most amplifiers can last 10's of years. We currently have 3 in the house. Two of them are over 15 years old and the youngest is 5. As long as you don't push them to maximum sound levels 24/7 a good amplifier will last you years and years.

Sorry folks, the wattage advise posts above arent correct. You dont need 100+ watts to drive a 2 way bookshelf speaker. Many valve and class A amps deliver 5-20w and will vastly outperform a 200w mainstream product. A good, budget NAD amp delivering 30wpc will sound fine and drive these all day. See if you can pick up a used but mint NAD 3020i, there were thousands sold in the 90's and one which has been looked after will be fine for another 10 years. Pay £30 or so.

No they're not.
For a solid state toroidal amp he should be looking at around 1.5 times the rated power of the speakers. The extra amp power is useful as a protective measure aswell as providing headroom in the system. Nobody is suggesting he spends a fortune.
