AMD Radeon HD 7850 2GB Review

With lower clock speeds and fewer stream processors than the HD 7870, how does the HD 7850 fare?

I didn't want to repeat myself too much from the HD 7870 2GB review. The fact that we didn't have a retail spec board, or power and thermal comparisons reduced the page count too.

Good point by Sonic. I held off getting a 6 series as my 5870 still trounces most of them.

Would also like to see some 400 series cards from Nvidia in there as well, although I know what the current games perform like on my 480 so I can compare them myself but other people who let's say have a GTX 460 may, be looking at one of these as a upgrade and not having them compared means they cannot really make a good choice.

If it was not for the fact that I know at 1920x1080 with Ultra setting's and all the AA etc on in BF3 I get between 35 to 50fps dependant on where I am on the map, then I could possibly think that the 7870/7850 performs better and go out and buy one only to find it actually performs around the same.

I think a pair of these in CF could give a high FPS/ in a few months after the cost drops due to Kepler competition. Also CF seems very attractive now due to the low 2D power draw technology they use. PLUS CF scalability seems to often reach ~95% in modern titles.
(SLi shares many of these properties nowadays though also )

Is it just me, or did anyone else expect a 7850 to cost less than 150?

Given that it performs nearly the same as a Nvidia GTX 480 which initially cost around 400 I think the price should be around the 200 mark but I would, say if they really want to shift high numbers of these then they should price it at around 180.

im sure , if kepler is as good as nvidia want you to believe , we might see movement souh on prices.

btw - theres a HUGE HOLE in AMD`s range , between the 120 7770 and the 200 7850

If 7850 prices end up starting from £180 that hole will be so small as to not really matter.

Still running my trusty 4890 here, turned out to be a great purchase all those years ago. I game at 1680x1050 and it handles BF3 fine.

LoL, im still using my 8800GT. It plays Skyrim surprisingly well, got it on high detail, with FXAA @ 2048x1152. But thats beside the point. I'm looking to build a new PC soon and hope to see some healthy competition driving prices down a bit on GPUs.

No, he's actually correct - a 4890 is not going to deliver acceptable frame rates without turning all the settings way down.
