4.0 Android updates for HTC
The IC update has started this week for HTC and is in Germany and Nordic countries today. Hopefully UK by the end of the week. Your Sense UI will be updated as well version 3.6

Sounds good. It's just a pity that my HTC Desire S won't be included with the first rollout.

Apparently the Desire S will get updated later in the year - which is better news than I expected - original rumours said that it wasn't going to get updated at all...

Only the Sensation range of phones is getting the ICS update first, And that's if your carrier doesn't slow the update down further, Those with the Desire line will have to wait a little longer, and longer again if your carrier has to change something.

Knowing my luck, Orange will release the update a week before i'm due an upgrade, which i'm aiming for the One X, and my upgrade is due in July.

Try xda-developers or androidforums.com go to your phone's subforum and 'All Things Root' should contain guides for doing it and links to ROMs.

It might look complicated but it's pretty easy just following the step by step.

Rooting etc...

Then go through the ROMs here, have a look at the screenshots, videos and other info and decide what's best for you.

Carphone Warehouse stock phone here. It's a Desire S, but it's upgradeable as soon as the recovery ROM is available.

I checked android forums-samsung and ICS lands today can update via keiss air etc so will look to update at some point in the day! Haven't really followed mobile updates as i have been distracted with BF3!

How does one go about updating an Android phone? I just got an SII and it's still running Gingerbread, I assume better things are to be had...? I'm completely new to this whole thing, my last phone was a Nokia 6500 I assume updating isn't destructive? I'm on 3 UK btw.

Settings-About Phone/Tablet-(Wording could change at this point) Update Firmware.

I've not known an update to be Destructive, but it's always worth backing up your phone data anyway, and as it's an Android device, Contacts and Calendar details get backed up onto Google.

I've got a Desire Z, and I'm not expecting an official release as they didn't even do Gingerbread official for it.

Having said that, it may be time to consider a good ROM for my phone once there's some stable 4.0.3 around for it. Hopefully Cyanogen will be doing it.

With the Galaxy S2 you can either update via the Samsung Kies 2.0 PC software or directly through the phone, the PC process is quite simple and it can backup of contacts, calendars and phone settings prior to the update:
1) Download Kies 2.0 from the Samsung website.
2) Install and run Kies - run any updates it asks for.
3) With Kies running, plug your phone into your computer via the USB cable and wait for Kies to recognise it (doesn't take long).
4) A prompt will pop-up letting you know an update for the phone is available (or not if your phone is up-to-date)
5) Follow the instructions and prompts on the PC screen to start the update.
6) Don't touch your phone while the update is in progress.
7) Done.
The via the phone method is what samkiller42 posted.

Personally I've never got the phone's own software update function to work on mine so have always had to go through Kies.
