CCTV DVR - Kills internet ?

Ok, maybe somebody can help me out here as its very frustrating.

My dad runs his own business, has up to 10mb internet with BT business.

When the DVR is unplugged from the router he gets 40ms ping, roughly 7-9mb download and around 1mb upload.

As soon as you plug the DVR in the internet becomes unusable, 500-2000ms ping, 0.5mb download, 0.2mb upload.

Does anybody know why the DVR would be doing this ? Its not like its uploading to anywhere its just there to connect to and view from home if he needs to. Changed the port and it made no difference, default port is 80 but is now changed to a random port, all port forwarding is set right but for some reason it just kills the internet.

Probably not helpful advise but I'll throw in my story of a similar issue:

When I got my Sky broadband they installed this typical device into the phone socket:

But I also have the Sky TV which SkyGO etc requies a second ADSL cable which meant they had to plug in a second adapter directly into the phone line:

SkyGO ADSL cable plugged into one, and then the Sky broadband adapter and cable (picture 1) was plugged into the second port. For the first few weeks I was getting nothing but 0.2 Mbs download and a fairly high ping but the router was receiving 12-13 Mbs. I unblocked the master adapter from image two and plugged the broadband cable from image one directly into the phone lines and suddenly I received excellent broadband.

So my advice:
1) Could be a faulty connector or something along the connections that is causing bottle neck.

2) Check your router settings (type IP into a browser) to see what your router is receiving in download and upload just to narrow down the cause for the problem. If your router is always receiving good download and just unable to route it then it is probably worth process of elimination trying different hardware, cables, adapters (not sure what the set up looks like).

___

Sorry it is not much and it is worded awful (tired). Good luck!

The modem is a 2wire modem that they provided, on the rear along with the usb/lan ports it has two smaller ports, one named DSL and one named telephone?

Now the rj11 cable is plugged into to the DSL port then plugged into a standard micro filter.

The internet is perfect when the DVR isn't plugged in, nice speed and decent pings but as soon as you plug the lan into the DVR the internet just goes tits up.

Its just the standard 2wire modem that bt supplied, and yeah the dvr just acts as another pc essentially, same subnet.

if you can it might be worth trying a different router, it could be a compatability problem, it's rare but does happen.

i have a distaste of the bt provided 2wire routers, they do what they are meant too, but i dont like the firmware they use
