Skittish GTX 480 Repair?

Recently got an EVGA GTX 480 Hydro Copper for the parts including water block and bracket to transfer over to my good ASUS GTX 480. With nothing to lose I tested the GTX 480 on air under the Gelid Icy Vision. At first it worked with a couple of frozen screens but once it got warmed up it seemed to be fine. Now the display driver fails and it crashes often. Just shooting for ideas on possible repair. I'm tempted to give it another clean and then blast it with a heat gun. Maybe it is as simple as bad solder?

Doesn't sound good man, but it's worth trying what you can. GTX480s were once (and arguably still are) notorious for dying of "old" age, however I wouldn't expect that from a hydrocopper. Any idea what the last owner did with it? (Barbecue? )

I gather they were DOA and warranty replaced but they didn't want the originals back. So here we are! It's good for the bracket and of course Hydro Copper cooler. Be super nice to fully fix the card as well though. I've brought it this far so I'm happy to commit a little more effort for the GTX 480 revival!

Don't forget that the Hydro Copper was particularly poor for cooling the vrm's so even though they were watercooled they still got hot especially if overclocked.

I have a plan for that and it begins with a 'D' for Delta fan!

That's for the functioning card however. Not played with the funked one yet.

So I've baked the GTX 480!

It still works as I'm typing this and no freeze yet. Need to try running it over a few days before I have confirmation of a fix but at least it's still alive for the moment! I'll let you all know how it turns out. In the mean time I need to sort out my Hydro Copper/ASUS GTX 480 hybrid!

The theory is that over time solder joints can dry up and become less conductive, by heating the card up the solder melts down and re-solidifies creating a healthier join

Its probably safer to heatgun it. Baking it could damage other parts.

Plus baking it upside down can cause the gpu die itself and other parts to fall off the board.
