P5KC Overclock
Hi guys,
I got a P5KC motherboard with a case that I bought, which I think had a flat bios battery. Replacing the battery and putting in a CPU and cooler managed to get the system to run for a wee bit. But the overclock is set to a rediculously high level, something like 4.5ghz, which is too much for the CPU in it to handle. Is it possible to flash the bios with a slower clock rate? The thermal shut down activates too quickly to change it, so another way to do it would be nice. Cheers Enterobsidian

Just go in to the Bios and find the bit that says reset to defaults and everything will go back to stock settings. No need to flash the bios.

Not sure if I'll have enough to do to find the resets for it. You wouldn't happen to know what the steps are, would you?

Just go into the BIOS and reset it. I'm not sure what you mean by "Not sure if I'll have enough to do to find the resets for it". Press DEL when booting, go into BIOS, and just look for "reset to optimised defaults" or something similar. Save settings... reboot. Seriously... it takes less than a minute. Have you tried downloading a manual for your board?
Just go here and select your OS (although to get a manual you can select any OS you like... it's the same manual)... then download a manual PDF. It will talk you through what you need to do there. If you're struggling to get into and resetting the BIOS for whatever reason, seriously... you don't want to go anywhere near flashing it

I have this exact board and I +1 Pookey's advice in the post above.
Hold down DEL before pressing the power button and it'll POST on default settings ignoring the overclock. Then use the Reset options on the BIOS menu. Its there. I've used it many times

Is there no clear cmos header?

He said quite clearly that the thermal cutout is activating before he can do anything in the BIOS.
OP: Look for a set of 3 pins with 2 of them connected by a little plastic piece, that is the clear CMOS header. Switch the plastic piece to the other side of the pins for 10 seconds, then put it back. This should reset your BIOS to default settings and remove the overclock.

Something is a miss
a dead cmos battery would mean the board should be at stock settings anyway?

The OP only said he thought it was a dead cmos battery. Presumably that wasn't the case, else you would be quite correct.

With that board.... holding DEL whie powering up and keeping it pressed forces defaults. If it's thermal tripping before even THAT can happen it's more serious that an overzealous overclock. If it was just clocked too high, it would fail post, and force defaults anyway... you know... "Overlock failed, hit F1 blah blah..."
Instagib has a great solution we all overlooked... probably because it's SO obvious. clear CMOS header... it's marked CLRTC and it's in the bottom right of the board. http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/...e3155_p5kc.pdf section 2.2.4 on the diagram. [edit] They recommend removing the battery AND setting the clear CMOS jumpers at the same time.

Hi guys,
I haven't had much time to look at the board recently, so I'll try to get it sorted over the weekend. The thermal trip goes pretty quickly, so I'll try the Del key method and see what that returns. If not, then I'll just scrap the board. I suspect the previous owner was running water and a silly high clock multiplier, so I need to drop it down to stop the thermal trip from activating. Cheers Enterobsidian
