More important for higher resolutions?

I was just wondering what's more important for a graphics card to play games smoothly at higher resolutions. Is it things like vRAM or clock speeds? I've currently got a gt430 which can just about cope at 1280x720 but I'd really like something that could handle 1920x1080 easily.

Thanks guys in advance.

VRAM first, I'd say.

What games are you playing? Just chucking vram at a card doesn't guarantee performance but at 1920x1080 with bf3 on ultra I see vram usage of over 1.5gb (as far as I can remember). Does your gt430 have 1gb?

Yeah my gt430 has 1gb. I'll be getting skyrim once my uni exams have finished so that's what I'll be playing.

In your case, given your card is 1GB, shader count and clock speeds would be more important. Most games are playable on 1GB vRAM, though of course it is beginning to be a limiting factor.

1920x1080

Is not VRAM limited on a modern card

6970 or 580 will max most games ( bf3, Crysis 1 and 2 excluded ) if you have the cash 680 2gb for 1920x1080 will last a decent few years

Yeah - I only recently sold my gtx460 which had 1gb of vram and it handled most things fine (not everything with all the eye-candy) - so as noiz said, clock speeds will be what's limiting you at the minute. This site http://www.geforce.com/optimize can give a good idea of what framerates you could expect from different cards on different games and what settings would get you those. It doesn't have all games but does have skyrim.

Which 560? Standard, Ti or Ti 448? lol I'd either get the Ti or a 570.

Yeah - for future proofing and for an extra ~£30 the 560ti would be an excellent shout. Obviously games can begin to become cpu limited - what spec machine are you running?

Id have to agree with GeorgeK here...go for a 560Ti and you should post your spec on here as you dont want your spec bottlenecking anything tbh.

It's really not that high spec at the moment. I got it pre-built last year without knowing too much about pcs.

Currently I have a dual core AMD athlon 3.1GHz, 4GB RAM, asus M5A78L-M/usb3, motherboard

I think my power supply is 400W so I know that'll probably need upgrading too.

Maybe not, if it's a decent brand like Enermax it would probably cope alright.

@OP: I would say get a used GTX560Ti or GTX570 and you will be just fine. I used my GTX570 for 1920x1200, it was more than enough.
