I do hope the Ivybridge-E is fixed from this issue, otherwise I won't be upgrading. Not that the upgrade from my 990X was a good step either...May have to hold off and not give into temptation.
Intel would be beyond stupid to release the bonafide enthusiast chip the same as these.
6 (or rumored 8) cores? It would melt.

The thing that was obvious yesterday is that my waterblock was really not going to help matters much. The heat isn't being transferred properly compared to sandybridge. Cost cutting might be the reason, or maybe they want more enthusiasts to buy the e version!

I am guessing the transistor change is another reason why its hotter..

Yeh, my temps are a little lower than yours and I'm at 4.6GHz with a bit more voltage...

Intel will surely fix this to a large extent with a new stepping.

Kudos Dizzi, you're a braver man than I

Thanks for the comments. I hope I haven't given myself a rep as the hardware section nutcase! It was more a rebellion against intel's ivybridge crapness...

Anyone want to lend me a 680 to play with? I heard something about dd ln2

Read an interesting article the other day (link) which postulated that the increasing density of CPUs is part of what is killing overclocking. Basically, the hot spots are so tiny that it's getting tougher to get the heat away fast enough by any conventional method. Then there's also the fact that "All of Intel’s manufacturing prowess is turned towards building smaller chips that draw less power, not ultra-high-performing chips that sacrifice efficiency to hit skyrocketing performance targets."

Anyway, good job on the IHS removal.

I disagree, OCing is better and easier than ever before. Maybe in 5 generations that'll be a problem.

It would be interesting to see a chart of the history of overclocking. I suspect that, while the tools for overclocking have gotten better the results may not have. I remember changing one jumper to get my Pentium 166 to get 200, no voltage change, no fancy cooler, ... A 20% increase with zero extra parts. Most similar overclocks I see now almost require replacing the stock cooler, bumping voltage, ...

I, and the article I linked, could be wrong - manufacturers need to keep thier chips running within certain safety limits and that always means potential overclocking.

Near 10 hours of prime @ 4.5 1.3v during the hottest part of the day in a closed box room which was stifling..

Under water this is going to be awesome!

Going to try a stress test at 1.28v, hopefully get them even lower

Im amazed at the high temps of these chips (both before and after dizzis effort).

Im very pleased i decided to get a another sandy bridge rather than one of these because for me, those temps would be unacceptable. I shall only be using IB in builds where no overclocking is required.

Either way good work dizzi, was an interesting read.

Those last lot of temps are slightly unfair or complete worst case scenario. I cut the air to the room when I shut the door and it was like an oven after 7 hours of being left. It dropped 4c when I came back in. Still not ideal but way better than it was before.

It was more about passing the stress tests after being modded..

Anyway, lets see what this does to it

After hearing that EVGA are late shipping out the 4GB versions of the 670 and overclockers being late on another order, I have been offered a 3 game bundle, free shipping and a small discount on 2GB 680 signature editions..

What do you guys think?

Personally I'd wait on the 4GB version. There was a reason you chose that in the first place.
