Not great.

2 cpus with 4 cores at 2.3Ghz is comparable with a single socket i7 920 at stock running 8 threads.

I don't believe that you'll be able to overclock it even.

And probably burn more than twice the electricity. Long term, it would cost more.

If you got the x58 stuff second hand you could probably build up an 8 core setup for pretty cheap.

I have a mint very overclockable i7 920 (4.2ghz on low voltage) and an Asus Motherboard that are a great folding pair, the board is going cheap as there are issues with GPU drivers in windows but as a CPU folding rig it is perfect, I ran it like that for 10 months without a problem, if your interested my sale thread is here - http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=234058

Ah yeah, didn't see your post count, heres a copy and paste if you are interested, I know I shouldn't really do that but as you are a team folder

1 x Intel i7 920 D0 fully boxed with unused stock cooler in mint condition etc, this is my personal "Golden Sample" out of 4 different 920's I've owned and this one will do 3.8ghz on 1.18v Vcore, 4.0ghz on 1.27v and 4.2ghz on 1.30v - £95 delivered

*** Will do this and the below Asus P6T Deluxe v2 for £120 delivered! ***

1 x Asus P6T Deluxe v2, perfectly stable for overclocking CPU's etc but for some reason it fails to install graphics drivers when you have a GPU in PCIe 16x slots 1 & 2 but will work in the 3rd 8x slot, have no idea what's going on with it but I previously ran my i7 970 hex core @ 4.2ghz in there with it like this for about 10 months folding away 24x7 and it was solid! Strange goings on so selling as faulty because of the graphics driver issues, if you just want it as a folding board its perfect, its fully boxed with everything it came with - £40 delivered

*** Will do this and the above i7 920 for £120 delivered! ***

with a GPU on the 3rd slot will it fold ok?

im right that you dont need x16 for folding?

also what kind of watt usage are we talking at the different clock speeds if you know them

and what PPD do these get?

thanks

I would have thought so on the 3rd (black) slot as I chucked a low end graphics card in there and it loaded the driver ok, just doesn't want to play ball on the blue and white slots?! But I have to be honest and say I didn't fold on the GPU in the black slot but that fact the drivers loaded I would have thought it would be fine

Yes you don't need 16x for folding in fact you don't even need 8x, some people have even modded and folded on a 1x slot!

I would have though with wattage draw anywhere around 130-180w depending on overclock and what other things you have connected.

This chip at 3.8ghz + will see around 20,000 PPD but again depends on what work units and also what operating system, Linux Ubuntu 10.10 x64 with the CPU @ 4.2ghz will see nearer 25,000 PPD on a good work unit

I personally can confirm this works. I used a stanley knife and carefully cut out the end of the x1 slot to make it open ended, worked perfectly with no hit on PPD.

im still undecided on running a GPU as i wont be able to run this rig for gaming and ive sold alot for pc components on ebay very recently so i wont have a decent GPU to go in it for folding only
