MK5 Golf GT TDi 170

Hi all,

I am currently looking at buying the VW golf in the thread title, looking to spend around £10,000 on a second hand model from 2006 onwards.

Does anyone here own one? Are there any well known issues with these cars?

Thanks!

Sorry for this but I am going to refer you to: http://www.whatcar.com/car-reviews/u...ummary/25304-5

The picture on the top right of the car has typical problems and it tells you the good and bad points of the car as well as what you expect to pay.

I would also like to know if anyone has had an audio jack fitted to the stereo, was it expensive?

I have experience with that as recently just asked the same question. I would guess most the VWs of that age may already have one BUT if they don't the best way is to replace the stereo and they start around £40 with fitting for around £30. Naturally being a geek going for a nicer one though :-P

I do like the stock one though as it fits in with the rest of the dash nicely.

Depending on the model you get, it should have one already. Most cars around that age have them as standard now AFAIK. Most cars do have an AUX port wire (even if it isn't wired in) but modding your car is beyond me I am afraid

Okay, so I know this isn't what you're asking; but this a forum and in the interest of a little discussion I have to ask... Why that model at that price range? - I'd understand on a smaller budget, but...

£10k will get you a BMW E9x 330(I or D) (Saloon/Estate/Coupť - your choice) with full leather, professional satellite navigation & DVD, front and rear parking sensors, etc etc and full BMW service history.

Servicing costs are not dissimilar, and even with the awesome 3 litre straight six there's only a 5mpg difference between the 330d and the GT 170? If efficiency is your game though, there's the 320d and even in its top spec, the M Sport 320d is insurance group 29, with the golf coming in at 32, closely followed by the 240bhp top spec M Sport 330d at only 34.

aaaand of course any petrolhead will tell you which is better to drive...

Sorry if this isn't very coherent - I am pretty sure I'm still drunk from last night; I only went to bed at 1300 and have just got up. (Happy new year LW!)

Happy new year TSB!

Both myself and the girlfriend like the MK5 Golf and we don't want a 3 series so that rules that car out!

Honest John keeps a good breakdown of things to look out for, but a car like that I would think about purchasing from a dealer and getting an extended warranty. A diesel like that has the potential for huge bills, even if you take supreme care of it.

It's worth thinking whether you want a manual or DSG, personally I found the latter is an excellent piece of kit.

Hmm I haven't seen many DSG models around but I would definitely look at it.

Why do you think that the engine could end up being hugely expensive?

There's a fair number of turbo seal failures on the PD engines; a replacement turbo, intercooler and manifold etc etc is about £2500+ apparently. Then you've got a few electrical problems (it might not seem it, but the number of electronics in there is obscene) and occasional steering rack failures. All big costs if it happens - it probably won't, but personally I'd pay the reasonable warranty costs as an insurance.

Also worth mentioning that, depending on how long you keep it, you've got a clutch and DMF to cover if you go for a manual, the DSG may need maintenance (although I'm not sure what they really need save for oil changes, presumably they may eventually need a clutch pack), but that's another high-cost job for a manual.

Your budget is plenty for a decent car though, I've had a quick scout on autotrader and there's a fair number of DSG-equipped cars around.

Sadly the Golf is the only hatch that I can convince my girlfriend to go halves on!

Thanks Krikkit, I will have another look around

I picked up a 57 plate mk5 GTi for a VW dealer, and the service rally has been excellent. The extended warranty is really good for pice of mind. Plus you get a year of breakdown coverage that use VW specialists (was able to get me a part in half an hour the AA claim no one would carry with them).

My dad uses a DSG and it really is fantastic bit of kit, not as fun as a manual though if you are into your driving and the 6 speeds are far less efficient than the 7 speed units.

Depends on the car. Some have the dry 7 speeds, some have the wet 6 speed. The 7 speed is far less needy in terms of maintenance and is far lighter. Seem to remember that bigger engines like this have the 6 speed.

Interesting, I will have a look into that! I would much prefer the manual really.

What would you buy for 10K, hatchback with good efficiency and a bit of poke?

My brother in law had the exact car him self and it was a really nice bit of kit. Big shame they did not do a mk5 GTd though, much nicer seats!

If it was me, I would have to get a GTi again, no they are not efficient, but they will put a smile on your face every time you drive, and the trim level is a little bit higher. If I needed to chose a diesel it would be a manual one of these.

I would love a GTi but most of my driving is motorway miles so the diesel makes more sense really.

Fair enough, though in my car sat at 80 in sixth I get about 38 mile to the gallon so its not a million miles of what a diesel can do.

If I were to get a diesel one I would probably look at trim and comfort over speed as your always going to be comprising. Get one you can enjoy being in on the motoway rather than a GT which will transmit way more bumps.
