From a piece of crap to a....slightly less piece of crap

So, I have a GeForce 9600 GS card in my build (as well as 2 GTX560Tis) running PhysX only.

And since there are virtually no PhysX supporting games plus the fact that I dont use my CPU and main GPUs for folding I decided to use the 9600 GS for 24/7 folding.

I inherited that card from someone and it is okayish for folding. Will clock something near 1900 PPD with default settings.

So I decided to slightly overclock it. Cranked up the GPU clock to 750 and the memory clock to 529 which gave a shader of 1900 (the 560ti has a shader of 1645 btw. ok different number of shaders but just as a reference).

So now it clocks upwards of 2600 PPD (on the same project).
Not too bad for a piece of **** I wont care twice if it melts.
It keeps a reasonable 62C and the fan is quite silent.

By the way. If you havent seen or havent heard of a 9600 GS before I dont blame you.
It is some OEM card that used to come in various vendor builds etc.

as a reference a quad core Xeon 3.2 can manage something like 1400 ppd

1400? Do you mean 14,000? What Xeon are you talking about here, I was looking at getting a Xeon 5450 folding for extra points...

Depends on the project I suppose. It ranges from 10K to 1.4k ppd.

And here is a tip.
If you are going to overclock a piece of hardware, especially if it is old, replace the thermal paste.

The temps of the 9600GS at full blast --->65-69 degrees
After replacing the thermal paste ---> 54 degrees

The old one had almost solidified

any 2nd hand gpu i buy i always apply new TIM

Good idea.
It is a small thing, but people (including myself) always forget. And it can make such a big difference.

Which is probably the same as saying, if you keep your hardware for a few years, replace the thermal paste once in a while.
