Steam branches into subscription games

Steam will carry subscription-based games where players can manage payments within the platform.

Too many new mmos fighting the king of mmos. Unless they can offer what WOW offers on release players are just quiting straight away. I know its not a fair comparison WOW has been out for years but the facts are you can either play WOW or play a new mmo with half the content.

Glad i got outta the genre when i did.

Till Blizzard releases Titan dont think WOW will ever lose its huge subscriber base that it has. Star wars the old republic had 1mil subs when EA canceled the payment service for the record so whilst 500k maybe enough for EVE ( the game cost very little to develop when comparing to the bigger mmos that have been released since then) the bigger companies are all struggling to break even at around the 1million mark.

LOL.... all games should be subscription.

I can picture it now....

21 per month for my broadband.

35 for Bioshock Infinite+1 and then 8 per month.

10 per month for iRacing.

5 per month for Tetris MMO.

10 per month for world of lego.

Subscription based games are the future.

Yeah I saw that and thought the same thing, I thought EvE was steep but at least it's unique, 12 for 30 days of something that appears pretty generic is daft.

The latter.

I don't mind paying for a game once... Battlefield 3 cost me 67 in total because I didn't buy premium. I don't mind the cost because I've put so many hours in. I don't want a game I'm charged for every month.

You will never catch me playing world of warcraft or eve online.

Ill take newer MMOs, like Rift, with "half the content" that is still 100% better content, any day.

Good move by Valve. If I was considering a subscription based game I'd certainly be interesting in managing payments through Steam. Keeps payment info in one place, and seems like it'd be able to use funds in a player's Steam Wallet. Wish this was in place while I was playing Rift.

I'd be worried about paying through Steam, wouldn't want my payment details stolen....

Not a fan of subscription games to be honest. Unless its an mmo where content is released continually (not DLC), but even then I only play GW2 over WoW because I don't have time to get 10 a month out of a game in my opinion. I'd rather just pay the 30 and play it whenever I like for as long as I want to.

The problem is that not only do they want you to pay monthly, but that you're also smacked for a high price of entry - on par with games that don't require more money to continue playing. No thanks.

So you forgot Steam was hacked, and they didn't exactly be open about it did they?

I prefer those who don't skirt around the issue and admit when they made a mistake so I know exactly where I stand.
