Hi ,

Just wanna ask all the geeks in bit-tech.net

How to test network connection between two pc using the ping command in Windows (dos).

Pc1

AMD Athlon 1600+ | Abit KT7A | 256Mb Sdram | Global Win TAK-68 | IBM Desktar 40.0Gb 7200rpm 60GXP | Yamaha 2100E 16/10/40 | Creative 52x |ATI Redeon VE 64Mb | Creative Vibra 128 | Dlink 538 TX 10/100 | Englight 415W

Pc2

P2 233MhZ | E-Pox (un-known model) | 128Mb RAM | Maxtor 3.2 5400rpm | D-Link 538 TX 10/100 | S3 Virge |

Pc1 network cable is 10Metre and Pc2 is 5Metre

If I understand correctly you just want to ping another box, if so drop down to dos and type ping x.x.x.x the x.x.x.x is the ip of the other machine. The IP can be found on win9x/me by going to run and typing winipcfg. In NT/2k/XP drop down to a command box by typing cmd in a run box, then type ipconfig /all. If you have a modem on any of this boxes the details of that will be displayed first.

Hope that helps

yep thats right.

say that ;
PC1 has IP = 192.168.0.1
PC2 has IP = 192.168.0.2

just drop to a dos prompt, or command box and just type
"ping 192.168.0.1"

and if they can see each other it will report something like this;

Reply from 192.168.0.1; bytes=32 time=<10ms TTL=255

this information isnt really important, its just states that the network is resonding faster than 10ms.

If there is a fault somewhere it will report ;

Request Timed Out.

This will mean the PC are not communicating, usally down to incorrectly configured firewall software.

Firewall software? the guy didnt mention anything about firewall software. You ned to make sure also that you are using the correct network cables, for a normal switch/hub between the PC's you need to use a standard CAT5 twisted pair network cable, and NOT a x-over cable (which is only used to connect multiple switches/hubs together OR to connect two PC's directly without any hubs/switches)

Also you need to make sure that the IP addresses are in the same ranger, using a compatible subnet maks also.

For example, say PC 1 has an IP address of 192.168.0.1 and a subnet of 255.255.255.0, and PC2 has an IP address of 192.169 .0.2 and the same subnet of 255.255.255.0, then they wont see each other.

All this may seem confusing but when you get your head around it then it will be a breeze. I know as I'm pretty network orientated from my job.

Hope that helps.:cool:

true, but why would he need such a restrictive sub-net

255.0.0.0 would be a lot easy as this doent lock him down so much

Hey I'm just trying to make things clear incase he has set the subnet mask to that range, some people may do so. Just covering all bases. Just a guy trying to help out. Sounds like you know some networking too though

Just one thing, whats that picture of a laptop on your sig for? Do you have one? I've got 2 at home, great for just lying in bed when you cant be arsed to get to your PC

netmask 255.255.255.0 will be just fine, unless he has over 255 pcs on the network. If he does then he shouldn't really be asking this type of question.

lets not argue, for fear of confusing him.

I would agree on setting the PCs up like this

PC1 ;

IP : 192.168.0.1
SUB : 255.255.255.0

PC2 ;

IP : 192.168.0.2
SUB : 255.255.255.0

That should work fine

That is the standard for home networks and has worked for thousands...

well in theory either IP would have done, so its not such a bit issue.

I thanked fly coz i see him as a mentor for houning my networking skillz, i hardly know anything.

Nad the future Rig, whats wrong with a Celeron, the core and everything is basically a P3.

Anyway, you shouldnt really be posting comments like that into the networking thread, we are supposed to help this person, not argue or anything.

Last comment : what i build is my business, not everyone has enuff money for a dogz bollox system, im not a heavy gamer, more a grpahical person.

I thought we weren't supposed to talk about that in the networking section

It's just I remember a thread earlier that i seen about you thinking of starting a lan gaming company... And looking at your profile you're a PC engineer, us engineers always want to have the fastest units. Just thought you might of been a gamer as you're in a counter strike clan.

Microsoft networking essentials is a very good book for understanding how networks run, to explain subnet masks is kinda like teaching the meaning of life if you know what I mean

This becomes a option, as does the custom pictures, after you have reached the 250 post mark.

Sub-Net Masking discribed in the simple terms is a meathod of limiting the amount of IP address availible on a network.

I see your point, but The NEW celeron is a very underrated chip, i can see it taking off if people get the image of the old Celeron out of there head.

When i get around to it, you can unlock these procesors upto 2Ghz with watercooling.

Oh and CS, you can run that on a Celeron 400 and still get 100 Frames, its only a 16bit game so a 2Ghz C will play no faster than a 1Ghz PC when you hit the 100FPS buffer.

Rght personally i think this thread should be closed, as the original question has now been ansaed and this is now turning in to a hardware conversation.

Thanks to everyone for keeping this thread a happy place

If you want to test the network connection for throughput you can uses SiSandra , it has a network testing tool as well as many others.

here is a website all about Windows networking. The guy is a bit of a guru but is German so his english isn't that hot and he has a weird sense of humour, nevertheless he is very informed!

You will notice that I have changed my post about the network settings, 192.168.1.1 instead of 192.168.0.1 .

If you really want to learn about networking, get a good *nux book. Why? , well *nixs were designed to be networked from day 1 unlike windows which had bits bolted on later on.I learnt more reading about linux networking than I did about networking at uni.
