lcd HD44780 controling brightnes and contrast how?

I got a lcd HD44780 20x4 display but no software as of yet can enable me to change the brightness/contrast as its way too bright.

If I powered it via a fan controler bus would this damage it?

What are you currently using to limit current to the backlight?

Fan controllers are usually for 12V fans, so you'd need to adjust your current limiting resistor to set the maximum current to ~300mA when connected to 12V. Once you've done that then yes you could use your fan controller to control the backlight (not the LCD power though!)

Standard HD44780 wiring scheme has variable resistor (potmeters) for adjusting brightness and contrast. Also some apps can do software brightness control, i believe (not sure) LCDHype, Smartie or another one....
