The "Freeze a CRT" thread :)

I'm in the process of freezing a CRT. For the prolouge go here (no more, the hunt is closed, V2.0 is up and running, please visit the Bit-Tech Treasurehunt).
Pics and stuff tomorrow. I have little or no wood at home for this so this might take a day or so to kick off...

Main concerns at present time:
  • Do CRTs float? (They do)
  • Is it worth it to try to make clear ice? (Yes*)
  • Has this been done before?
  • The freezer is full. May i borrow yours?
  • Putting more stuff in this thread.

* The first one turned out all hazy thus atleast one try with the aim of clear ice is justified.

With plywood walls it would most certainly not break, just think how you can abuse the monitor in normal situations. With even pressure around it it would survive. I think... Well' see.

That mouseholder will have to go, or is it really cool?

I have some wood to build from, lets hope i won't have to go shopping. Will take some photos during the build, if anyone is interested... It's just a box anyways...
I will be aiming for 1-2cm thick ice around the monitor.

First cut + drawing:

Glueing one side:

I needed to extend this a little, otherwise i had to go shop and i'm not in the mood for that.
After cutting this and putting the glue on i was struck by a blinding realisation. My sister has all my tools atm so this will just have to cure as best it can (those are the only clamps i have that's long enough) and i'll stick someting over that joint later...
Maybe i'll go get my tools today. Otherwise they will arrive tomorrow...

Yeah, but frozen = sub zero.
Update coming, box complete and testfilling with water. To see if it can still keep itself in one piece and to see if i will be able to get it out of the freezer.
(Its filling right now so the update migth be postponed )

Yay tools!!!

I sawed the combined thingy in half, the glue hadn't cured yet. (And won't)

Pieces of a late tabletop.

The "floor", an old catscratching-pole-mounting-plate. Fur removed, slightly shortened...

The freezer, again, after the cipping out of lots of ice. (It wouldn't fit )

The ice.

I glued and screwed the first wall, the rest was just screwed, or i would never be able to take it apart.

Higher res + ruler:

The box + the display + the mom

Nice fit

Filling, went ok. I need a bigger bag though, it didn't quite fill out in the corners...

Thanks to ImageShack for Free Image Hosting

It's really heavy, might need some help getting it out of the freezer.
And the mouseholder had to go, regardless of your preference as to the coolness...

4.55*4.10*4.20 = 78,351 ~ 80l ~ 80 kg ~ 176.36981 pound

Yes it's cool, thats why. I'll recap since the treasurehunt is now deleted...
We were searching for something frozen in ice. I, as a joke, suggested someone should freeze a CRT. After a while i got to thinking... I had an extra monitor, some space in the freezer. Plus a burning desire to do wierd stuff. So there ya have it...

Better sig?

The only thing i see taking up room is the tube itself, as the rest will be flooded. As the corners of the box are not completely filled out i think this negates any weightloss incurred by the monitor.

That'll work, not.
And why would i put it in upside down? Wouldn't it work out the same way if i just turned it over when finished, very easy to do btw?

Edit: Haha, found it. But i bet you don't use them (the words) the same way as we do in Sweden. Block och talja = Pulley and tackle.

More edit: Well i guess you do, almost... Clicky

Not sure, the anchor would probaly need to be emersed quite some length, this could be done with wires but that would ruin the effect... Or look even cooler. I think i'll go with screwing into the frame, need some longer sqrews though, and maybe some mounts.
I guess a trip to the store was inevitable...
A thought, what should i do with the monitor cable? Something artistic, let it hang out or what?

Would it support the 80kg? It's old dried out and specifically not made for this...
I would still need to prepare "plan b" if it broke. Remember, it will be -20C when lifting it...

No progress. I might go buy a block and tackle, or just some pipes and string to make my own. I also need to find a beam in the roof, preferrably exactly above the freezer...

I didn't make it to any store, will get the suspension sorted this evening...
I'm thinking about ways to make the suspension movable about one meter to the side... It might be to complicated though.

Lifting device

Since i have no long screws i will not be able to get this up tonight. But i can do the pieces...
One of the many joys of living near a factory is the containers. If you need something you allways go here first. Pipe and wheel:

Bent from stress test...

Will make a nice "slider". I would like to use it as a roller, but that would require a much too flimsy pipe...

Is this:

Or this the best option?

Not using a screwdriver ofcourse.

I was thinking about moving the freezer too. I would if i had more space. As of now i have trouble getting the lawnmower out of there. In fact it is banned from the garage until this project is over. Will get a pic of the mess on the next update...
