2000 would be my bet.. very stable system.. try doing a search for "iis hardening" on google for some security pointers..

Whats the server for? You verywell may not even need the server version, unless of course you want to use it's integrated services.. ...

It couldn't hurt to use Zonealarm or similar I suppose, but 2000's IPSEC does work pretty nicely, I use both on my 2000 pro. machine..

wel the server is for

[1] routing the internet to a hub, and the other 8 machine in my family...

[2] to serve as a file backup, hence the 80 gig.

[3] to be used as a fire wall, or some kind of an internet connection barrior. ukno

[4]to just keep an eye on things basically

Thanks mateies

id reccomend tiny personal firewall and use pc anywhere, with that you can access the desktop of the server and control it from your pc, tis quite a nice little prog. Then you dont need a big screen and you can keep ya server box in a cupboard or wardrobe

http://www.openbsd.org

Probably the best unix-like OS to start off with as a firewall, as it comes fairly secure out of the box. I personally use FreeBSD for my routing/firewalling, but it's just personal preference. OpenBSD has gone through a line-by-line code audit (and still is) so it is considered to be one of the most secure OSs available.
