New at networking

Right i'm not completly new at netowrking but not up in the leagues of netowrk admins and so forth.

The problem is this: -
3 Computers (names: Dads, Lola and Jenna)
Lola and Jenna running XP
Dads running Me
Lola and Dads can see each other on the network
Jenna is not viewable, although sometimes you can see it but not browseable

The plot thickens:
Dads is running ICS and Jenna and Lola can both browse the net when Dads is connected.
All computers are connected through a Genius 10/100 8-port hub.

Dads = port 1
Jenna = port 2
Lola = port 3
i'm pretty sure this diesn't make a differance.

So I need to get Lola and Dads seeing Jenna. Also they can all play network games except ones that require a IP address.

Any help is gratfully acepted.

First off make sure you can ping the machine?, if not then its most likely problem with tcp/ip which will need sorting.
Make sure you have file and print sharing on the ME version, if it is goto an win xp box then start->search->computers or people->computer on network->the ME machine name. If it finds it and you can access the share then its just taken time to announce itself. Also check that your not using a personal firewall that may be blocking the broadcast.

I can ping 'dads' but it can not view it on the network. All the computers are on the same WORKGROUP. GJUK what do you mean by a 'copy' of ME. I of course support MS fully!

Sorry you did say maybe 'you have a copy of ME'. I am sorry, I hate it when people think I have copies of things!

are you suggesting that the 'original version' you have is
a) The only one ever made ?
b) different to all the others in some way ?

what is the definition of a copy....

i think any windows CD counts, be it a pressed MS original or a copyright infringing CD-R.

OK OK!

Can we get of the subject of what is meant by 'COPY'. I obiviously don't have hte only ME CD made. There of course was millions of them.

Just the fact GJUK stated that the 'copy' I had may contain errors (which most CD-R copies may well do).

Can someone please help me with my problem. I don't think it lays in the ME machine as that machine sees my second XP machine (Lola). Jenna (my first XP machine) is not viewalbe or accessable on the network. But yet ICS runs via Dads (ME machine) and accesible by all. That solves whether it is on the same workgroup problem (which I know they are).

Cheers for that GJUK. One more thing I have the original!

I don't think XP will work on 'Dads' its olny a P200 with 128mb EDO-RAM. Best not to chance it.

The issue here I think is share permissions. ICS AFAIK does not need for the PCs to be in the same workgroup. One way of faultfinding is to start at grassroots and work your way up.

cables connected? = obvious way of checking.

link estabilished? (lights on hub/switch) = as obvious as above.

TCP/IP working? (machines can be pinged and have been assigned an IP) = One way of testing the TCP/IP setup is to statically assign the IP address to all three computers,
do one as 192.168.1.1 , one as 192.168.1.2 and the other as
192.168.1.3 and then try and ping from one computer to the other and then vice versa. Ensure all PC are in the same subnet.

All machines share the same workgroup? = Check for spellings

Drives have been shared? = check drive properties.

this is not a complete list of all possible variables but you get the idea.

One issue could be XP's "wonderful" inbuilt firewall

Go to Network places > properties and then to the properties of your LAN connection. Click the advanced tab. Under Internet Connection Firewall, Uncheck "Protect my computer..." and try again. If this solves it one of the firewall settings is too strict.

here is a link to one of the best IMHO Windows XP networking help sites
