There is conflicting information on this, so I thought i'd ask here, hopefully someone knows for sure.

is the dell 2407WFP panel a true colour, 16.7million colour, 8-bit monitor?

some people say it's 6-bit and uses dithering, others that it has a 8-bit panel but only has 6-bit electronics, others say it's properly 8-bit.

I am going to be using it for photo editing (yes i know CRTs have better colour, but that's not really an option - i am not a pro but colour accuracy does matter to me) so this is actually important.

Please, no gamers or general usage guys posting "i have it and it's fine, the response time is awesome" - i know it's 'fine' and i simply don't care about response time - i simply have to know: does it, or does it not, use dithering?

    Thanks.

Your question may now be a little outdated because Dell are replacing that monitor with a new version, not seen detailed specs but expect it to be better than 8-bit at the same list price as the existing screen. Hence why there are so many bargains for the old screen. Specs include

I can't say for sure, but I'd suggest drawing a black-to-white gradient in photoshop and see if you can notice it at all at 100% zoom. I've noticed it on my MBP screen where it doesn't show at all on either of my Dell displays (05 models), and as someone was filing a suit against Apple over the issue, I think it's pretty safe to assume that the MBP panel indeed uses 6 bit color and dithering.

I was under the impression that the early 07 models may have used dithering, or at least looked as such: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2006/06/23/Dell_Ultrasharp_2407WFP_monito/3

ok it seems fairly conclusive that it's an 8bit panel. that's reassuring. i am leaning towards this because there are some awesome deals on it from dell at the moment so i think i might splurge.

(for anyone interested: dell value code D07C12 - remove the warranty and add the 24" panel; athlon X2 PC with 1Gb RAM for £525.)

2407s - in keeping with the thread topic :D ;)

At the time (May 2006) the 30"ers were well over twice the cost of a 2407 quid a piece and i'd have also had to get a dual-dual link DVI card. I quite fancy a 3rd 2407 if i'm honest... my desk is big enough to take 3 :D

That would be a pimpin' setup, but could you actually use the space?

Easily. It isn't even remotely hard to run out of space on only two lots of 1920x1200 :D You almost can't get enough real estate when programming. If/when 3007's ever get down to 400-500-600 quid, i'll splurge again

I'm jealous just for the desk.

But it would be way too expensive for me. I could afford the monitors easily enough (I already have one 2405 which I'd just stuff in the middle so it's symmetrical), but the $2500 I'd need to drop on the minimum Mac Pro to run that wouldn't go down as easily when added on top. Not to mention the cost of the bigger desk.
