Just because your version of Photoshop is newer, doesn't mean it will be any easier for you to perform a given task. Yes, they may be using an older version, but their experience makes up for it. It's like people who pick up the newest, most expensive digital camera they can find, but they still take the same photos because they don't understand anything about composition or exposure.

They might as well be using a disposable point and shoot, for all the good it will do them.

Photoshop is a tool, just like a camera, or a dremel, or a sculpting knife, or a chisel, or a _______. In order to use the tool properly, you must practice with it, and learn the subtle aspects of its design.

Buying books isn't the magic solution to everything. You can pick most of it up online with the hundreds of tutorial sites around, and it's free.

Just a quick go from me

Try to reduce the hardness of the brush edge, when you select a brush there should be a drop down at the top with the brush size, in there you can set the brush softness.

No, no, no.. you guys are going about this all wrong. Sorry to butt in so late into the thread but cutting out an image properly should be done using the pen tool. Not the eraser or wand or brushes, because 1: they are far too inaccurate and 2: you can't change anything post tracing of cut-out with those tools (except the undo command of course); but you can with the pen tool.

The image above was done quick within a couple of minutes, and doesn't look too good because the I used the versions in the first couple of posts so they were already jagged and missing pixels, but you don't get the 'haziness' and of using a brush and the cut-out remains super sharp.. of course, post trace of the cut-out you can add in the haziness if you require, but with the brush methods as used by you guys, you can't go from haziness to a sharp edge.

    EDIT:

Just noticed the link to the original - this one was even quicker to produce than the first one but this is before any post-trace adjustments to get all the curves and smoothness in.

He told you: the pen tool in Photoshop. It was even in bold ffs. Read some photoshop tutorials and learn how to use the program. It won't come overnight but through hours and hours of practice you'll eventually get better.
