I have a similar setup and it plays okay (a little choppy in places) with everything turned up to high. If you're willing to sacrifice a few effects it would speed things up.

A 8800GTS 320mb would be a better upgrade than a Q6600 for gaming. The CPU upgrade won't boost things by much (8-14fps).

I'll agree, for gaming I'd drop the money on possibly even an 8800gtx, rather than the mobo and the Q6600. In an instant.

However, I'm doing more and more CAD work with software rendering, as well as transcoding dvds, music etc. Dropping money on a new graphics card leaves me on a mobo with no upgrade path other than a pentium D, which isn't going to happen.

In terms of Bioshock, I'll wait a few weeks, and grab the demo at uni to try out. JANET all the way!

I have the same setup (albeit with an AMD X2 4400). It defaulted to everything on high, and at 1680x1050 it's ok, little slow at times, but generally playable. I knocked it down to 1440x900 (Use the ATI CCC to set 1:1 pixel scaling to give you native res with 1" ish black borders) and it runs super-super smooth.

Not sure how much the dual core is helping though....

I was actually surprised how well the demo ran on mine, a 939 x2 4*00 (cant remember) but then my little 19" wide is less than a match for my 8800. I guess most games these days are gfx limited, well apart from supcom the killer of systems.

There was only one DX9 card tested.. kinda lame =\
I don't think more then 50% of members have DX10 cards, why not include some tests with like a 7900 and some of the ATI cards as well which are DX9 only but still fairly recent

I hear ya, but in the interests of time, one had to cut off somewhere. We will be using BioShock for our graphics reviews though and in the mid-range reviews at the very least, we'll be including previous generation cards like the X1950 XT and 7900 GS.

Well, technically there were two but given that Tim tested no fewer than TEN cards, I think we can forgive the fact that owners of 18-month old graphics cards or older were kinda overlooked. I'm sure 7900 owners have a good feel of which mid-range 86xx series card theirs lines up with

similar story here. but i call 20FPS to be playble, 30FPS to be luxury. the game defaults to High, i set Actor detail to low, and turn off Vsync. then kept everything else.

running around 20 (lowest i've seen was 16, multiple spicer and 1 big daddy all with water and flame everywhere) on my X1650pro 256MB AGP hammering the poor slightly overclocked Sempron 2800+ (1.6Ghz to 1.8Ghz, Sempron 3100+ speed)

What exactly does actor detail cover?

Dang, I dunno how I'd play the game at 20fps... it seems quite jerky :eeek:

God damn I can see myself really loving this game, bought it at launch.

Unfortunately it keeps randomly crashing, and I have so far managed to finish the medical area after the millionth crash. Updated graphics, sound and chipset drivers, made sure the game was upto date, seems like a lot of other ppl have similiar issues with it on the pc (esp. nvidia users). I figured I'm going to leave it a good few weeks for them to iron out any problems before I delve back into it, 5 minute bursts is just no fun :(

What really pisses me off is that my grandad (yes my grandad) is well ahead of me in the game on his xbox 360 (yes he has a 360 lol)

Well, I have the game, I'm impressed by the game, I enjoy it a lot but there are minor graphics flaws I just don't want to see nowadays. Let me show you what I mean. And that's happening quite often, at least for me.

Anyone else think this game is absolutely amazing?!

Aside from all the 'activation' groans from people, this has got to be one of the best/exciting/good to look at games i have EVER played. best ~£25 i ever spent.

    Just my 2 cents.

I found a room on the 360 where the water rendering and lighting completely broke (it went opaque blue).
