Or criticisms of my list? Once I get 10 in the list I'll make this thread into a poll and see which game theme tune is best. Will be very interesting to see what happens! special recognition to: half life two: Sewage Hovercraft music, the section would have otherwise been a very bland helicopter chase. Add the music then it becomes OMGZOR THIS LEVEL IS AWESOME! Dance Dance Revolution: for making an addictive, innovative game dance eJay: for allowing us to compose dance music anthems in seconds Guitar Hero: for giving us all godlike shredding skills
I'm a retro music fan. Nowadays its far to easy for developers to just get bands or music producers to fill a game with any old rubbish. In the past you had to know what you were doing to get the most out of a sound chip. I'm not saying music in games now are rubbish - some are great - I just appreciate very good programming talent. Anyway, heres some of my favorites: Opening Screen/Menu to Supremacy (C64) Ghouls & Ghosts (LV2 - Amiga) Turbo Outrun (C64) Last Ninja series (C64) Plok (SNES) Lost Vikings (SNES) Zelda - Ocarina of Time (Intro - N64) Command & Conquer - Red Alert (Intro - PC) Flash Back - (MegaDrive - Ending) ActRaiser (SNES - All battle levels) Zelda - Link to the Past (SNES - Ending) Creatures (C64 - 2nd Torture Leel)
1. Mario/Sonic (Sorry, couldn't decide lol) 2. Chrono Trigger 3. Shadow Of The Beast Series 4. MGS 5. Duke Nukem 3D (Duke Nukem Jam) 6. C&C RA (Hell March) 7. FFVII 8. Starcraft 9. Streets Of Rage (I & II) 10. Monkey Island
Dire_wolf, that was it, Hell March, couldn't remember it for the life of me. That was bitching. I don't think GTA counts because they are real songs rather than songs made for the game, apart from Lovefist of course
Some of the old LucasArts adventures had amazing music - The Dig & Full Throttle both had outstanding soundtracks.
Ah, The Dig. What a game. Too bad it never played as nicely with DosBox as it should have. Good call on the chopper chase in HL2. Actually, that game as a whole really used the music well for setting the mood.
Breaking Benjamin from Halo, yea Gravemind as well. Also that Waynes World song that was in the Gears of War advert everyone has heard that.
The Monkey Island opening theme. It's a funky little Caribbean bit, very catchy, and I never got tired of it (like I do with most game music) - I can still hear it in my head when I think of it even though it's been years since I played that game. Wait.... Here it is: Even the MIDI files aren't too bad: http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/5729/monkey.html
Some of these do not include original scores etc but the best soundtracks to games for not only the songs but also there use are: Sonic the hedgehog - Ghetto Metal Gear Solid - (1 is probs the best as it has a place in my heart and the 2nd game managed to ruin 1 and 2 for me) Homeworld very - good use of cutscene music especially when you return to find your world destryed and have to save the reminents of the population Bioshock - The use of music is very wide ranging and good imo modern classic Command and Conquer Red alert - If only for hells march but was plenty of other good songs Final Fantasy 7 - Boss battle music GTA 3 & Vice city - GTA3 was probs my fave but cant beat some retro tunes in Vice City Streets of rage - Ghetto Thats all I can think of, off the top of my head
