Scratch Build – In Progress Case Mod: Canary Mesa

Thank you very much. I plan on applying a clear protectant, not sure what it is going to be (poly, shellack, boiled linseed oil or danish oil) and let the natural color of the wood come out. I plan on accenting it with Mac Ebony on the corners, top and perhaps the legs, just working out the details in my head right now.

 

Sorry for not posting anything lately, but I should have some time soon to post the corner brackets...

 

Maybe it's too late to post this, but for angled alu I always use a mitre saw. Goes through it like butter and leaves vey clean cuts that don't need a lot of finishing work.

 

Word of caution, Pfaffen. I've worked with canary wood before and I know that it doesn't like daylight too much. If you can - finish it with UV protective finish. That will prevent color from fading out, and turning boring brown. Other then that, keep up the good work! r

 

Great woodcraft, wonderful colors and a nice idea having the monitors standing atop the "wood-computer" - how will you handle the heat as it rises upwards? Those 80mm fans surely arent enough, or are they? I hope so

Thank you very much for the advice. I will go on an office desk with a large picture window, but no direct sunlight. Any suggestions on a UV protective finish?

Well, I had some time this weekend and finally cut the corner pieces and scroll sawed the designs. I think I should go back to shop class. It has been a while since I used my scroll saw and even installed the blade backwards for the first few minutes. It kept popping up as the teeth would catch. Stupid me...

Any way here is a shot of the fininished corners.


Also I bought some Purpleheart wood for the table top. It is a very heavy wood and need to take care of your equipment. My planer did not like the density and I had to plane 1/64" at a time.



Here is a shot of the table insert all glued up.



The insert goes in the space between the mitered corners and will support the Mobo, PSU, HD assembly and everything else.

Not late at all. Just made the first test cuts this afternoon. Trying to decide if I use mitered corners with JB Weld or just overlap them together.

My preference is the finished look of the mitered corners...

Oh, and I'd use a hacksaw on that aluminum.

 

Well, last night I cut the dove tails for the legs of Canary Mesa.



The trick was to align them with the dove tails in the top rails to accept the corner brackets which where also dovetailed.



So when the are assembled (currently dry fitted) they make a nice tight corner



With all the legs assembled, and turned over this is what it looks like.



Here is a close up of one of the corners.



Here is a shot from the top. The black line at the bottom of the insert is not a gap. It is a shadow. I have not cut the rabbets along the perimter to fit. I was just making sure the dimensions of the insert were correct (13in x 19in).

Solid! -and I can't think of a better word that a woodworker would want to hear.

Here is the beginnings of the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) bay.





The plan is to support 4 SATA HDDs.

Here is a shot of the blanks in place.



Here is a straight on view.



The spacers are .25" but to make sure there is enough air circulating, I doubled the gap between the 2nd and third hard drive.



This morning I started to put the rails in for the hard drives and finished off the box. I am really impressed on how strong the JB Weld holds.

Any suggestions on how to paint the aluminum? Do I need to sand and prime it, like with wood? I intend on painting it black or gray, don't want to be able to see it well from the outside.

 

As others have said, nice job on the contrasting wood! Purple heart isn't an easy wood to work with, but you seem to have managed quite nicely!

I like the plan for the corners, looks good so far!
