Wow. I had no problems, and to my knowledge neither did Jamie or RTT. Then again, I took the RTT approach - I keep my stuff organized in one directory, so I offloaded it onto my 2.5" USB HDD and happily did the total format.

But anyone who doesn't back up data before installing a whole new OS is kind of asking for it, as much as I realize that macs are supposed to appeal to a lower common denominator and all. Hell, there's a brain-dead easy backup function built right into Tiger...

I have nearly 300GB of files on my computer (not counting games and apps) so backing up is prohibitively expensive for me.

Hm, it went fine for me. I just popped the disc in, rebooted, selected English, and waited while it did its thing. Sucks that it's happening to a few people, but you have to expect some people to have problems - it's being reported that over two million people bought it over the weekend, and you can expect at least twice that number for installs between disc sharing, family packs, and piracy.

Yeah i can really see the pirates contacting apple for help.

"Apple please help i stole you software and now it doesn't work."

Oh well, now no OS is "perfect" and everybody knows it.

The problem isn't just caused by that enhancement software, it's also been reported by people who had external drives plugged in during install.

Those files can't be that important to you if you can't justify dropping £50 on a 400GB external HDD.

haven't had a single crash since going to vista, that's not ONE single crash, hick up... explorer restart.
The only thing to hickup was iTunes after updating itself, so that got killed pretty quickly

taking a page from the mac fanbois book when vista was released and they all said they will stick to OSX.

Well I think I will stick to my perfectly installed and running vista ultimate system thanks. No Blue(textless) screens of death for me since my vista install.

Now who's System is running smoothly, and who's isn't? xD

Clearly the tables haven't been completely turned; Microsoft and their OS's still need to improve in some areas.

But it shows that situation is less than black and white. Nobody is perfect.

Well her it goes, see you on the other side, but better!

*After a few seconds, mac goes into a blank stare, falling onto its back*

    PC: MEDIC!

The BSOD only happens to people who had installed APE on their Tiger systems. APE is a GUI expansion library for altering the way things in the OS behave, of course it's going to **** up the install, and of course Apple isn't going to know how to fix it, it's not their bug. That's like blaming Microsoft because Norton Anti-Virus screws up your system.

It should be noted that all the crashes have been for people who do upgrades instead of fresh installs. Moral of the story: NEVER USE AN OS UPGRADE!

It's like blaming Vista because Creative, Nvidia et al were too slow off the mark.
