Yes some people spend a lot of money that may be better spent somewhere else, but I think everyone does that on one thing or another.

What the!!! that last sentence WAS uncalled for. Someone should tell them that pc modding is a passion and that you dont have to be uber rich to mod.

The last comment isn't talking about modding, it's talking about people who run Tri-SLI, which IS generally way too much power than is necessary.
yes, but its as if he is implying that spending that kind of money on a pc is done by people with no brains. and there are other ways to spend that much money on a pc than just tri sli. 8gb of ddr3 for example.
which would also be something done by people with more money than sense. you can build your computer up to the point where it can run any game on max settings, but when you go beyond that it is really just wasting money. and 8gb of ddr3 or triple ultras is a waste of money. and the "scalable content" thing mentioned in the article is ********. design games for the current hardware. when new stuff comes out next year, we will be playing new games. people aren't going to keep buying crysis just because it challenges their hardware.
heh, I saw this on Yahoo earlier and asked what the point of the article was - is he saying PCs are the new hot-rods? Calling something that enthusiasts have been doing for the entirety of human history (that is pushing whatever hardware we have to it's limits) a "fad" is a tad daft. In almost any area of life you will find enthusiasts that spend a huge amount of time, money, ... and computer enthusiasts have been doing this ever since it became possible. This is not news. Actually my biggest disappointment was that he didn't mention Bit-Tech - though given the tone & quality of the article it isn't much of a loss.
having 4 8800 ultra's in your computer is having more sense then money. But explaining the differents between a game pc and a dell would be like explaining the difference between a Nissan Micra and a Alfa Romeo to people who see car as just a mode of transportation. They only see the price. You could throw around numbers but they don't understand them anyway.
That last sentence probably was on the TRI-SLI stuff... Alltough I totally agree that a lot of people (certainly on this forum) could do with a lot lesser PC. My day to day machine is a Pentium M 1.5GHz laptop with 512MB RAM shared with the IGP. Not a powerhouse, no dual core,... And I'm a heavy PC user (average load is 3 or something 95% of the time). The only thing I complain about at times it that I have to wait 10 seconds for some things, more of an annoyance then a reason to buy a new laptop. My nerves start to boil at all those "build me a pc for office use" threads where people recommend C2D or quad cores, >1GB RAM, ... Not even talking about RAID setups and such... Quad (or more) CPU's are great, and I administer some multi-multicore CPU setups, with 64GB RAM and such, but that is a SPECIALISED environment, and gets put to use. I have access to a Petabox (1.3PB to be precise), which is full about 70% of the way... That's used hardware, not hardware for the size of e-******, like a lot of people over here have.
yeah, for day to day use, there is no need to buy an expensive computer. I just dont think that anyone should judge someone else because they want to spend a lot of money on a computer. (or anything else) I work with a guy who in the last 6 months has made 90k and he wants me to build him a 4000 dollar pc in the near future. is that necessary? no, but he wants the best that he can get and he doesn't really care about the cost. for him, a day trip is going down to vegas to spend some money at a casino. I'm sure that everyone could take a look at anyone and say that something they do is stupid and makes no sense. but we all have our own little likes and dislikes. So I say that if someone wants to spend the money on a tri sli setup, power to them. Some people may say thats stupid, but he can easily afford it, so why not?
Bah, The reason we trick out our computers and use way too much money in the process is the same reason we trick out our car. Namely facade. Or the quest for something unique and personal. That we can use to show off and wave at other people and say "Look what I got" Nothing else ladies and gentlemen. Now where did I put that Visa and me Dremel. Time to blow some money on nothing other than personal satisfaction...
When I spend money on my PC and my gf/housmates and friends are like 'is that really neccessary?!' I just think of the amount of money we all spend nearly daily on alcohol, the fact that most of them are seriously in debt and have nothing to show for it seems like much more of a waste of money to me than a 24 inch screen
Good point, i went to school with a guy who got drunk everyday in january just because he could. all that money(and braincells) with nothing to show for it except for broken memories.
