I be fibbing through my teeth if i didn't admit to seeing the Yuugou by Nick Falzone and wanting to copy it... hopefully imitation can be the sincerest form of flattery...

My question to the tech heads here is... 'deep breath'

Can you make a case entirely from wood?

Whats the absolute minimum of metal needed in the case...

As you can see from my posts i'm noob to the max... but i remember a vague bit about faraday cages being needed to isolate components.
I'm an apprentice chippy so it would be nice to do something intricate and beautiful rather than slamming up door linings all day :D

    all wood huh? sounds good...

let's see... what metal do we need...
    • you need the casing around the HDD's to keep them dust-free (you could make a wooden "capsule" for each one though)
    • mobo/GPU/RAM can not be stripped down. The heatsinks all need to be metal. (watercooling *could* allow you to build more capsules though)
    • PSU can be stipped of it's casing, but you will obviously need the metal bits inside. One could easily replace the PSU metal cover by a wooden cover i suppose...
    • all the fans can be made of wood. It's hard, but one can dream, right?
    • The whole case itself doesn't need metal. You want proof? You get proof
    • Optical drives? see HDDs.

A metal shell keeps electrical interference from affecting anything inside the computer, and prevents any noise from escaping. Metal is also beneficial for heat dissipation.

Then you'll know the main problem with any wooden structure is that it can warp as the moisture level changes, so where dimensional tolerances are tight, something more stable should be used. Forget Faraday and electricity, forget heat dissipation, all-plastic cases work fine.

An all-wood outer skin with a metal motherboard tray and back-plate, maybe metal or acrylic drive cages, would be fine.

I wouldn't do that, 220V causes quite an electric field...
