Alright for a bit of background info. I work for a college as a systems admin.
I do pretty much maintain everything with a circuit board in this place.

Okay so our college leases all their systems through dell with a level of support that basically allows anything to happen to the systems and parts get shipped to me with a tech in hand.

We had this storm a few weeks back that blew out some power supplies (I know why don't we have power bars on those systems... well I don't purchase things so ask the other guy.)

So I am on the phone with the tech and he transfers us over to this dispatch guy that basically sends me out the parts.

The dispatch tech is going through the parts and he is like three power supplies.. Are they for the same system.

There is a pause from me and the other tech.. Finally I say "um yeah its a really powerful system. We do a lot of math with it"

In the background I can hear the other tech laughing his head off while trying to mute his mic.

The dispatch guy is like "wow must be some system". I respond with "yeah it is.. amazing how they pack all that technology in a desktop system"

Dispatch guy "really ? its still the same size as a normal desktop?"
me "yeah. they really pack this stuff in there tight."

the call continues from there as normal but with the other tech laughing in the background trying to answer the dispatch guy as best he could.

This call really brightened my day I don't mind saying.

    Have a good day everyone.

we actually don't have a math class on this campus hah.
In the other campus that I actually attended we had a binary math course but honestly never touched a computer.

why would a tech ask if 3 power supplies are for the same system. He is paid to know better than that.

the funny bit is that the call is for a desktop unit. Dell doesn't sell a desktop unit with three power supplies.
Its not like this guy would deal with servers either. its a dell desktop support line.
The guy had no idea what he was talking about.
My dry sense of humor just went along with the guys stupidity.

and don't give me any nonsense about redundant psu's either..
there is always someone in the crowd that has to question the simple joke.

Hehe. Pretty funny. I have had a few calls like that myself. (Not to Dell, though)

One time I called HP support I talked to this really nice lady. I have seriously never met any person that friendly and helpful (all though the problem itself couldn't be solved). That really made my day.

Just so you know, it's often the same people on different support lines. The next time you call server support you might get the same guy.

The guy probably just assumed it was for a Poweredge server or something.

It's always fun to mess with support guys a bit - at least for the other support guys (former support guy).

i have answered the phone for a cable ISP here in holland for a while, i did have some pretty cool canversations. One time me (and the client) were both laughing our asses off so hard that i just disconnected the line, went for coffee, and called him back. Mind you, the customer was pissed off worse then a Spanish woman with on a bad-hair-day when i picked up the phone. I broke about every single rule the company had, but the guy was happy again. Now for the added slice of awesome: my boss happened to be listening in on THAT particular conversation. He was actually mad at me... , man i HATE working for assholes!

Anyway, moral of the story is that there's probably a nerd just like us on the other end of the line. So hate the company maybe, but be nice to the people. :thumb:

i love dell gold support ... no more calls routed to non-english speaking "technicians" ...

i work in the IT department for a mid-sized regional bank ... and i usually call dell gold at least 3 times a week ...

I used to own a dell. I used to enjoy calling tech support, some Indian fellow would pick up and say please, which is polite, and do this kindly, which is funnily unnecessary."Please press ENTER kindly sir."
