Photos First day out with DSLR

Hey all,

I recently entered my 4th decade and my friends decided to mark this occasion by 'awarding' me a Nikon D40. As i had been saving for a Nikon anyway i now had the cash to spend on a lens and saw a Sigma 50-150mm F2.8 for a bargain on another forum so i snapped it up... a few of the shots that follow are from my first outing on Sunday in London.

Absolutely agreed. That camera/lens combo really draws some beautiful pictures along with your talent

 

Thanks guys - not sure it was talent though as the lens is incredibly sharp and also as i mentioned before it was a perfect day for shooting.
The only downside was that the lens weighs a ton and i got hand cramp.

Edit: Added my flikr as i see others have. Just need to find the time to order them a tad.

 

I'm not sure if it was the lens or you either, but who cares when you're making shots as great as that?

The focus in them is spot on imo, especially the cellist. Then again, I have no talent, I'm just a guy speaking as he sees. Anyway, in the immortal words of the intertubes: Moar plz.

 

The only thing that you can attribute to the lens is the sharpness - the composure, framing, and exposure is all you. And I must say, all three are excellent in all of the photos.

Very nice shots, but I particularly enjoy the skateboard picture, it's a great capture, beautiful lighting in all the pictures.

 

I can see you don't like heads very much...
I like the last one, quite fond of the silhouette.

Vers - good point there. I need to pay more attention to the exact framing of the whole picture, not just the subject. On 2 of the pics above i could have shot a tiny bit higher and got the person's head in.
One thing i found was that it took a while to get used to taking snaps of random people. It felt odd, as if i was invading their privacy, but i got more used to the idea after the first hour or so.

 

I actually like the picture of the skateboarder without the head. It draws your attention to the location rather than the skater.

 

Agreed. That's what gives the picture tension in my opinion.

 

Great pics! the centre of London is SO full of good photo ops. I must start toting mine around a bit more.
