inspiron 6400... i think the x1300 ati card is pci-e... so it can be replaced right? its a 1.6 core duo (not c2d) 1gb ram... i was thinking something like a 8500/600 card... if so i can just unplug the other and connect the new one right? any ideas? cheers
You'd probably find the most information by looking at Dell's support pages, but don't get your hopes up. The card uses the PCI-e interface, but that just means the logic controlling it is based on PCI-e. The physical connector and layout is very likely proprietary. It's the same situation we had a few years ago when many onboard video chipsets were advertised as "AGP Graphics." Technically, they were, but for any purposes that mattered they were just onboard video.
X1300? unfortuantely i believe that is an IGP card that you cannot remove, im not 100% sure on that so do no quote me. If that is the case though then you cannot upgrade/remove it.
X1300 is dedicated, X1100/1150 are the integrated ones, but the GPU might still not be removable for other reasons, like being soldered on the mobo or something.
These links are from ebay, which is not always the best place to buy, but they are good for pictures, and occasionally info. item 1 (card in pic does not match description, would not trust this if you were considering buying a replacement from fleabay) item 2 item 3 item 4 It looks like the MB was also used in an XPS, but I don't know which model. Chances are good you can use the XPS video card in your laptop if that is the case, though you may need to beef up the PSU.
I meant dedicated in the fact that it is not built into the chipset or anything, there was never an integrated graphics core called X1300, that was a dedicated core, however, it could be that they form factor of it is a ball-grid array or something else that would make it nearly impossible to remove.
i have the same lappy, unfortunately im 99.9% sure it can not be removed as it is solder to the mobo!!
it looks like the video is a seperate module - take a look at the Dell service manual at: http://support.euro.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins6400/en/sm/video.htm#wp1006368 don't know if you can get any better cards though, Mark Edit: quick bit of digging on eBay - known cards are X1300, X1400 and Geforce 7300
With my fujitsu siemens Amilo Pi1536 the x1400 can be replaced with a few mxm modules as its a standard mxm class 2 slot, but dell have used proprietary connectors in the past, so even if its a removable pci-e card it may not follow mxm standards. http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/Notinthelist.html
how much better is a x1400 over a 1300?i know the 7300 is overpriced and underpreformed compared to the 1400 but I'm unsure how much better a 1400 is over a 1300
The X1400 form what I can tell is an X1300 core with slightly higher clocks and more v-ram. In all honesty, you probably could just overclock the X1300 a bit(assuming mobile cards are supported in ATI Tool or something, of that I have no idea) and get similar performance to an X1400. The first real step-up is an X1600 on ATI or GeForce GO 7400(maybe not even that big of a step there) or 7600.
Yeah I'm pretty sure you can run Rivatuna on it, i've got a work Dell D620 here and I've got the 7300 which I've got beta drivers overclocked for, not that it makes too much difference, what are you trying to run? the 8500/8600 are alright for most games, but won't fit in the slot where your X1300 went, they are a larger size and have a bigger heatsink on them I'd go for a 7600GT if Dell still have any lying round, they probably don't
You can bolt in a 7900GS, I think, but the problem is you'll have to modify the existing cooling to accept the core, and then hope that it can adequately cool it. The 7900 is for the 9400 / 1700 units. I have the same lappy as you, and i've searched this avenue before...
From messing with some Dell laptops, I think they have been using the ATI AXIOM interface, it certainly looks like the physical interface. If that's the case, there are a lot of potential cards, but it would take some serious hacking to make them work physically. With the cost of the cards, and the potential for disaster, it does not seem to be worth it.
The x1400 will fit that laptop. I don't think any others will. Dell don't use either the Axiom or the MXM modules. It's a proprietry Dell design, so you won't be able to swap it for a model from a different company. The problem is that some of the machines are interchangable without the card being offered. The 9400 would take a 7950gtx but you couldn't buy one because you have to flash the bios but I don't think the 6400 has the same internal design as any other dell laptop.
