Windows Vista, should I do it etc?

I know its been asked before, and yes I've used vista before SP1 etc however I'm tempted to come back to it again and this time purchase it.

What I want to know is;
is it worth it?
Did SP1 fix the very slow network file transfer problems?
Premium or Ultimate?
OEM or Retail?
Should I jump to 4GB of ram from 3GB?

I'm sure I can think of more but I'm kinda tired right now

 

Yes, I have had no problems apart from a couple of games that wont work.

Premium, no point in splashing out for very little extra, unless you want things like 128GB of RAM, hard drive encryption and a couple of other things. Its not at all like the XP Home vs Pro

OEM unless you plan on putting it on another system in the future.

Yes, it will let you run the RAM in dual channel witch will give you a good boost in performance.

 

Personally I think it's worth it - I do like a touch of shiny, and it's pretty snappy in my book.

Yep, network speed is back!!!!!! (sorry for the excitement, but that was the biggest thing putting me off too).

Oh, and Premium... Can't believe I wasted cash on ultimate - no I don't want my wallpaper to move thanks!! (oh, unless you want to connect to a domain that it), and I don't class texas hold 'em as an extra - card games are free online dammit.

More RAM the better!

 

Vista x64 Home Premium. Does the job nicely.

Vista ultimate retail here - love it. Bought three copies so far, converting my machines over to it.

Had it since day 1, wouldn't go back.

 

Have you used Home Premium? I would like to know from someone who uses Ultimate on a regular basis their thoughts on Vista HP, to see if they miss anything.

 

Vista HP 32 bit = very happy

 

Get Vista 64bit with 4GB's of RAM and you will be most pleased

Well you use the funky GUI stuff so your best off getting Home Premium imo

 

Is that the basic difference between the two? Literally i open windows, flick to steam and load TF2 or load the game directly. Is it honestly worth spending extra money for funky gui?

Stick with XP if you only use it for gaming, perhaps 64bit?

 

If that's all you do, there's no reason to spring for more than Home Basic. The only features most people would miss between Premium and Basic are the Media Center and flashy GUI.

XP Home = Vista Home Basic
XP Media Center Edition = Vista Home Premium
XP Professional = Vista Business
And Vista Ultimate is everything. It doesn't have an analog.

or XP 4bit, you can try get one, but i doubt it

 

I've resisted Vista myself on the basis of A) basic mistrust, B) I dislike the fact it's so bloated and would only turn all the whistles and bells off anyway and C) I haven't seen anything that's made me think 'Wow, I'm really missing out not having DX10 right now"

The additional RAM addressing is nice, but I haven't found anything that can't manage just fine with 3.5GB at the mo.

 

+1 for networking being fixed, and i've noticed that copying large amounts of data between partitions on a raid 0 array takes about half the time in Vista SP1 as XP SP3. I've been dual booting both until I was happy with the Vista, then ran XP as a virgin install for games and am now in the process of migrating my games to Vista after I discovered I get higher Crysis framerates in Vista due to it being 64bit.
I wouldn't bother with ultimate, I don't use any of the additional features and dreamscene loses its novelty after about ten min of having a matrix background. Take the plunge

 

I think you mean the 64bit version (i.e. XP X64)

 

With regards to OEM vs Retail I had absolutely no problems installing an OEM copy of Vista Ultimate 64bit on a second system, just had to ring microsoft and confirm I was only using it on one system in order to activate it.
