Olá Brasil!!! that is a nice project you are doing, how about putting some red LEDs under those acrylic sandwiches and make them react to sound, temperature or something else?

Well it helps if i know where u live :) if it is in Sao Paulo - Brazil, i cal teel like 4 places where u can buy them in all collors, but not in all shapes. Colored acrylic are sold only in complete sheets of 2m X "something". At least in here.

That acrylic is in fact RED. But it looks pink in the photos.

Thanks for the kind words! :)

    Olá Portugal!!! ehehehheheh

All the pieces containing red neon acrylic will have some sort of illumination. But not reactive to something. This will be done in the yellow part of the following picture:
The green part is what i've done i the last post, the yellow is composed by 5 acrylic rods that will react to sound or hd activity. I am yet to decide this.

Thanks for the words fellow "tuga"! From the fellow "brazuca"! hehehehehhe

You want white, blue, or UV leds. They really make the UV glow compared to the other colors. ;)

Na minha opinião em trabalhos de acrílico o acabamento é o que faz a diferença
    Muito trabalho e boa sorte

In my experience, the UV cold cathods are the best for that glowing edge on the neon type acrylics. But i never saw a decent UV led im my life :/

    So there are some workarrounds:

-We could use White or red Super Ultra Bright LEDS. If i use the blue ones on this red it became purple. That would be nice if the whole case would light purple, but some of the internal cold cathods are going to be bright red, so that won't work.

-We could use simple "holes" in the chassis. Through these holes the internal cold cathods would light those parts. I have to teste that thou to see if the leaking light will suffice.

Thanks... whatever that means :D heheheh

Aye! the finishing touches are the most important when talking about acrylics. Thats why i am being VERY careful with it.
    Thanks friend :D

Today i had a little drawback when testing merging diferent kinds of acrylics. Not because of the acrylic itself but because of my tools. I will buy some more material tomorrow, and as soon as i get the stuuf i will continue on the work.

Thanks all for visiting Hephaestus Project!

www.besthongkong.com :D I bought 50 of the cheapest 5mm ultrabright white LEDs. They are TOO bright.
I was thinking you would imbed the LEDs in each part. That would have messy wiring, though. :(
Holes work well, but the glow will have shadows in it.
I thought the blue LEDs would make this stuff look purple too, But the UV in the blue LEDs just makes if glow a brighter red on the edges.

It worth some testing. I have some of each color but red.

The first idea is to have the leds embed on the pieces. And to help with the messy wiring i have designed a kind of "conduit". Take a close look in this picture:

If u look under the center main piece u will see that there's a recess under it. Hard to see in the picture, but its in there. This piece is already done, and it is the big one in this picture:

As for the link, thanks for the tip! The site is really amzing, and i think i would buy something from them.

Thanks for comenting too. You have always constructive ideas and alway help people :)

I just had to say that:thumb::rock:

    A nice idea.

Yesterday I woke up with a nice idea. As the neon acrylic sheet that i ordered didn't arrived, i decided to put to work my idea.

To use it, i had to remake one of those 4 pieces from the previous post.

    So here's what i've done step-by-step.

As we can't find acrylic sheets with more than 10mm, i had to wel 3 8mm pieces together.

    First i cutted them...

    Then i welded them together:
I've done that to be able to work them together.

With that done, I used a "circle ruler" (whatever it's called in english) in the most beautiful single acrylic piece i eve saw. Unfortunatelly, it is a single daughter of a single old mom:
    Way too beautifull!

With that "circle ruler" i've found the the center of the fiece to use the 30mm hole saw:

    Ready to be drilled:
I had no hole saw until a week ago. Now i have 5 :D

And this is the crude result:

    After some filling...

And this is the result before sanding:

Now its time to weld the acrylic rod in place:

    Sawing the excess:

After sawing, i discovered that the piece is not quite acrylic (polycarbonate?). It is something "diferent":
The smell (the true acrylic have no smell), the sawing dust and the texture are diferent...

Even being sawed near the limit, the filing is imperative. After some time filing, thi is what i've got:
As this end won't appear, i am not too concerned by its looks.

With that done, the piece needed to be filled again to match the other that was originally from that part. Only 2 of the 3 original layers will be used:
Yeah... all that finishing needed to be redone.

Time to add some personality to the piece:

Ready to be sanded and polished:

Ela polida sem o encaixe de tras...
    Filing + sanding = torture!

    Completed:

    Second test:
Notice that now we have 2 acrylic rods.

    Detail:

    Another detail:

I am happy with the end result hope you like it.

    Later mates!

you could put a circular led thing in that end cap... something like a circular pcp with several leds that rotate according to an external stimulus.... like the hard drive functioning, or sound. think of it like the kitt's (from knight rider) front sensor.

    similar to this:

    Thanks Oreon :)

Thats a good idea, but there are some more "reacting" lights in the front:
This one will be the hdd lights...

... and these ones will be DVD lights:
I am planing to use the Kitt circuit in that one.

Although this is the original project, i am yet to figure if it will be all like that. But that idea is really nice!

    Thanks all for visiting :)
