Hey folks - Im looking for a bit of input about which antivirus to choose. Previously I've been using Norton + Spybot, until yesterday when I managed to infect my gaming pc with a rootkit (virtumonde). Spybot was admerable, and Norton utterly pathetic (it found one of the sys32 .dll trojans and that was it) I ended up using some free software to scan the registry etc with norton just siting there eating processor cycles like a greedy 2 year old. So, as of today I need a new antivirus. Ive heard / read good things about bitdefender, kaspersky (draconian defense!) and AVG. Id love some input from fellow BitTechers about what they consider the antivirus to have would be Thanks in advance!
Personally Im a fan of NOD32 just because it doesnt take up so many cycles as Norton and when it scans your computer it goes way faster than Norton ever did on my computer. The only downside to it is that a one year license costs $40
Kaspersky scares me, as I have to battle daily against my own stupidity. Is it less resource heavy than Norton et al? NOD32 looks to be in the same vain as Kasp - I guess it doesnt suffer fools gladly
I was going to ask what kind of product "Norton Pants" was? I thought that maybe they'd just started being honest after all these years For family members PCs, I use avast! (it's free with frequent updates); for my own system, I use NOD32. It's not that scary, honestly!
I swapped from Kaspersky to NOD32. NOD32 has a very simple interface if that's what you want. Or you can dig out the command line and get all medieval on it's ass
Yuppers, it was nice to wave goodbye to norton and see 7 or 8 processes disappear from the tree. I've installed kasp, but Im gonna try NCP32 as well, to see which antivirus is prepared to put up with me Thanks for all the helpful suggestions folks! The Kasp rootkit checker has kindly found some more Virtuamonde for me too - if it caries on like this it will be harder to remove than iTunesHelper/iPodService...
I use AVG Internet Security (the paid for one) for all of our Windows machines at home. Not had any problems (other than when it is learning what programs to let through the firewall). I wouldn't use Norton if you paid me. Notice that the PCWorld adverts are now pushing Kaspersky? I wonder if they got too many negative comments/lost sales because of Norton... Andy
Yep Andy, that would be my guess Although they have gone from something with a 'fire and forget' reputation for ease of use (probably because it doesnt do anything) to kaspersky, which, well, its not at the top of the user frendliness pile is it....
QFT Simply the best and most easy to use AV suite out there, an awesome example of software worth paying for
Right Norton and Mcaffe are the same and poor. AVG 8 Internet security is good. Anti Vir is also very good.
