Alright ladies and clever people, age old problem with a new twist. I've got a Western Digital 200GB ATA hard drive, that has been sat for a while in my desktop and i've never really paid much attention to it. Took the dead HDD out of an old Maxtor Onetouch enclosure and discovered my HDD shows as 137gb. Odd I know, i'd have understood if I was running XP with no service packs like back in the day but it shows as such on my OpenSUSE11 laptop and my SP3 XP machine. Anyone got any ideas as to how to make it show its full capacity?
Its completely empty, no partitions nothing, so I would have thought that it would just format it at the size it shows when there are no partitions on it?
It may have a hidden "recovery" partition, Dell style, do you know what it was originally installed in?
Those are annoying, had one of those once, took me ages to figure out. If its empty get the Ultimate boot CD or a copy of Ubuntu and reformat it from there. There may be hidden partitions that can't be seen from Windows.
Interestingly enough, it only detects as 137gb in the bios. I've got 200 and 250gb SATA drives that detect fine.
Has the drive ever posted 200GB? if not you may have somehow stumbled on a ridiculously under sized drive from the factory. More likely is that it has a jumper.
137GIG is too low... I think there is partition or Jumper. It should be around 170 - 189 GIGS, Maybe it have a ghost image or some thing on a hidden partition or the back up one. Otherwise I can't help Good luck my buddy
definitely a jumper. kinda like seagates always coming with the speed limited to 1.5 gbps, and you have to take the jumper off for 3.0 gbps
Both my raptors were found as 137 gig in windows, can't remmember what I did but now there at 150, so its not a smaller drive, its some sort of preset... hang on I'll try and find out Edit - here http://www.techsupportforum.com/har...e-support/141408-western-digital-250-gig.html it just says to goto comp management and sort it there, I remember there being an SP1 problem with drives over that size, but that wouldn't explain bios or Suse
The onetouch enclosure originally had a 250gb drive in it, which my PC detects as a 250, along with my other drives. The Laptop runs suse and also detects it as 137. WD Tools on a certain boot disc sees 137 :S
Seagate's Seatools program is able to restore the HDD to it's native size, it says it will work on any HDD not just theirs. I used it on 1 of my 120GB HDD's that showed correctly in BIOS and Vista but when tested with Seatools showed it was slightly smaller, I ran the restore function and it fixed it. Though I still get a boot disk failure error when I install service pack 1.
