Got and old update i've want to post to show that the project is not dead. I just had to get a new PSU after a little soldering error on the old one bZerk 500W Aluminium, that PSU got some great modding potencial! That's how it used to look like, that andonizing was a bitch to get rid of, After tearing it in parts i finaly started with some priming. And a small area of the side door needed some coats of paint just for the looks. So when all the other areas are painted why not just paint the inside of the front? And here we got the beaty (beer cans allways come handy, just had to drink up first) And some overviews. The mesh in the front looks sharp :dribble: This is actualy a pretty old update but still i had to post it to bring some life in the thread again. You can expect and update with some new pics within the week and maybe some pictures of the mod in an almost finished condition after the weekend. Comments are always wellcome
The only pictures i got acces on for the moment is some sucky pictures taken with my phone (kind of lost my cmaera), it gives a view but it's not quality pictures. I've tapped out the fans and screwed in some stainless M5 screws. You can also see how the mesh is together with the front. A little sideview. As you might see it's tight for the space, I can't imagine how it's gonna be with 10 harddrives inside! And that's how the PSU turned out. Anything to add or comment?
that doesnt look to bad. i wouldve heat shrinked a little closer to the molex connectors though. and i do know. i would do something different with the front/top. where the gap is. i wouldve cut my sheets a little lo9nger and let them meet up.
Well if you're thinking about the old Chieftec PSU I've painted and mounted a fan on I'm not using that one. If you look at the last picture it's a pre sleeved PSU. Yeah the gap, well I can live with it.
Update 02.07.2008 After a year or so I've removed the dust from the case and continued working on it. Here I've drilled holes and mounted the Start and Reboot button. You can see the pilot switch in the back for the catodes. I had to attach the HDD-rack some how, this became the solution but I have to stiff it up sideways. This LCD display was laying around. There I made a template. Marked the window. The result after the cut-out. With the display mounted.
Update 04.07.2008 I had some nice "zip tie holders" with double sided tape for the cathodes, this is the backside of the sidedoor. Here I uses the bolts sticking out on the inside, zip ties here as well. Then I sleeved the power and reset switch. The bolts sticking out on the inside is ingenious for cable management. Soldering was next, I just made a multiple fan connector. One of the fans were dead so I had to tap the spare fan i had laying which i was saving for the CPU cooler. How it looks at the moment. I'm not a good photographer so the pics the UV lightning sucks ASS, but i shows the effect. Plans: - Extend the cables for the cathodes - Stiffen up the wobbly HDD-rack - Get the LCD display to work in Linux. - Do some cable management and then start using the case =)
Update 07.05.2008 First I dismounted the sata controller and another controller for getting HDD's/Optical drives outside the case (which in my case is for the DVD-burner). They need painting. Time to make a new HDD-rack. I used 8mm thick acryl. Started to cut with the jigsaw, I got tierd of it and went to the tablesaw. Perfect for 45 degrees cuts. Two almost identical plates. Forced the plates together and drilles holes, I used the old rack as a template. First i used a 3mm drill-bit which is standard, then I used a 4mm drill-bit in case i drilled sideways. I desided to tap the plates. And when everything went so well it CRACKED! Made a new plate and drilled identical holes. It will look something like this inside the case. How i mounted the rack. Glued the 45 degrees angles together and laid it there for drying. The midnight sun went down, when I was done (04:30) it was actually daylight outside...
nice to see you starting on this project again, great job on the drive cage, how about gettin some new, more up to date hardware? hehe
Thanks dude. The hardware list on the first page is not up to date. This is how the todays list looks: - Asus A8N-SLI PREMIUM - AMD 64 "San Diego" 4000+ @ 3 GHz - 2*512 + 2*1024mb Kingston Hyper X 2-3-2-6 - HDD's 2 TB for storage and two raptors for Linux - XFX 8600 GT - 2* BenQ FP93GX
Update 07.05.2008 I was planing to mount the fanblades from the red fan which didn't spin on another fan, just removed some metaldust and it worked again. My sweet little cooler. Test fitting the rack, a keyword for this case is tight The hero doesn't work without food or beer. This is how the wiering for the cathodes is done, after I was done with it only half of the cathode was enlighten, but there were light in all 4 of them.. Any suggestions?
Did you try switching the CCFLs around on the inverters? Its possible one is dead or an inverter is dead.
Yes I did, everything was working before I did the wireing. I'll try to rewire the extension of the cathode cables later. I've typed wrong, I ment half of the cathode was enlighten, but there were light in all 4 of them.
What I've learned is that you shouldn't lengthen the wires at the kathodes, because you would need special high-voltage cabels. That's what I mean:
The only problem with the length on the cathode cables is that they dont reach the inverters, but now I got some defect cathodes laying around that I can steal cables from.
Well, here in Europe we envy you in the US for getting a drivers license when you turn 16. BTW our drinking age is 18, it's only in Denmark it's 16.
in Germany its 16 for beer and 18 for booze. most of Europe ive been to is the same way. Europe has public transit too, so cars aren't such a necessity
