    back to the topic tbh
you're overcomplicating a very simple pointless point

you cant "divide" something that doesnt fit with the definition of division

The division works fine, your multiplication doesn’t. 1/0 = ∞ is generally accepted within the basic mathematics we are discussing.

    stop baiting me! :(

the definition of division is that it is the inverse operation of multiplication. the relationship is reciprocal and thus must work both ways... so the fact that my apparent aberrant multiplication doesnt work is indeed the point. you cant divide by 0, because you can't do the inverse operation and multiply back.

hopefully weve confused CK enough that hes no longer hiding in his bunker and has forgotten about his impending radioactive doom

Well of course you do. Oddly enough even modern calculators can’t comprehend hyperreal numbers.

    Never.
No. a/b is the number of times b goes into a. Thus 0 goes in to a infinite times.

Only when dealing with the basic number systems. A good example of the opposite is that multiplication is possible with matrices but division is not.

    :)

So what are you guys saying?

That the number of missiles bush will send to iran is infinite? That the limit will never be reached?

True story. This was some years ago now, but it sticks in my mind.
I know someone who was advised that google was the best search engine to use.
He promptly entered google into Ask Jeeves, but as it returned, in his words, "multiple entries all with different endings" he was unsure which one to use.

    I.... errr...... Don't get it...

As a matter of fact, I don't get this entire thread. Given the current stability of international relations (compared to the 1930s), I can't see any major wars breaking out. Any wars that do break out will likely be between the US and some weaker country like North Korea or Iran, so it'll be heavily one sided and there'll be no chance of it kicking off into a full-scale world war. Nuclear Weapons will never be used.. Purely because nobody is stupid enough. Everyone knows how dangerous they are, and there is no way anyone would fire one unless in VERY unusual circumstances.

I mean, the US is so ridiculously powerful compared to everyone else that no one can really amass a force large enough to take it head on and start a world war.

We're working over a field here, most likely the real field but that's irrelevant as this applies to every field you're familiar with. Since infinity is not within the set, 0*∞ doesn't even make sense, and since it's a field (and many other reasons) 1/0 doesn't make sense either.

You can define 1/0 (see Riemann Sphere) but it still won't be a field and it won't make sense in many contexts.

The point is fathazza and I both have backgrounds in math, we can split hairs all day long.

I think the belgians are more likely to relax to some sweet jazz.
