Thanks a ton guys! The best is yet to come though. I'm particularly proud of the custom HDD cage which should be showing up in the log very very soon. Stay tuned!

Not satisfied with a measly 2gb in this memory-hungry gaming world of today and willing to swallow the bitter pill that is Vista to make use of a full 4gb, I set about procuring another pair of Reapers. I wasn’t that happy with the heatsink design, but I had made half the investment already and was determined to make use of it. However, I happened to run across the new Reaper X memory from OCZ with an updated and obviously better heatsink system.

Better yet, it was a 4gb kit FOR ALMOST THE SAME PRICE as one more set of the 2gb originals. Seriously, it was like 10-15 bucks more and that was it – for twice the memory and better design! Also it matched my theme better. The mod gods were smiling on me that day!

They are wider than the others and look like they MIGHT not fit 4 modules together, but I will have to test that later. 4gb should be enough for a while though… I think.

Patch time:

Remember that hole in the divider I needed to fill? I found I needed to fill the hole because I saw how the HDD assembly I was going to build blocked it completely after I rendered the case fully in 3d.

I rendered it to an accuracy of 1/64 of an inch since I'm just a little bit anal retentive... (I originally shot for 1/32 of an inch, but things weren’t lining up right – all measurements were re-done and adjusted but I may have missed one or two by accident). If anyone is planning on modding a V1100 I plan to put this up for download – and it should also work well enough for the V1000 as well. The wheels aren’t added in, but for most folks they’re going to be left alone or replaced entirely. It’s a sketchup file so it’s easily accessible. Here are some pics:

The ~~amusing~~ annoying thing is how much time I spent on those HDD cages knowing full well that I had no plans to use them. Hopefully someone who is planning on using them will thank me. I used plenty of groups, so the case can easily be virtually stripped down too. The time I spent working on the virtual case (a month or so) and the nice 6 month gap in modding afterward are the reasons why I put off the log until now. I probably waited too long, but there's nothing I can do about that now, eh?

Onto the patching:

I filled it with a circle of styrene plastic – I do a fair amount of modeling so I have a bunch on hand. The picture sucks though. A photographer, I am not. I also never realized just how poor my camera's low light sensitivity is. Once I got down to adjusting my photos, all of my non-flash pics were super-grainy. I fixed this issue later, but until then, I have some crappy pics mixed in.

I superglued the disc in place and filled the hole up to flush with Apoxie Sculpt from Aves studio. It’s a nice 2-part epoxy based putty that, while slightly crumbly, is easily workable and dirt cheap. The website if you want to order some is avesstudio.com. I also took the opportunity to fill in the mounting holes for the original drive cages and lower compartment divider plate. Once cured, I sanded the spots flush. After all, what good is a prominent piece of metal without a glossy beautiful paint job, eh?
