Taking the current prices from Scan.co.uk as the example. HD4870 -- http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=831077 £180ish delivered or GTX280 -- http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=832699 £255ish delivered As you can see the gtx280 has dropped in price recently. Am I mad to by it given I have a 1680x1050 monitor? It will replace my X1950XTX and with be kept for at least 18 months. I intend to upgrade to Core i7 with new RAM and mobo (but not monitor, case, hd's etc.) around Xmas. Is worth the extra money for a wee bit more future proofing? I intend to pick up Far Cry 2, Crisis Warhead, Fall Out 3 as they come out. Got to spend some money before the other half mentions something sensible. D.
This web site suggest that the Geforce 260 (22inch (1600x1200 or lower))/280 Details: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-radeon-charts,2020.html Results: http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/graphics-cards,1.html
Well, if you upgrade from a X1950XTX either one is a major jump up I don't think you'll notice the difference between GTX280 and HD4870 on a 22" screen. Unless you plan on upgrading your monitor aswell anytime soon, save yourself the cash and buy the HD4870 and some beer
either would be a good chouice for that res, but i think the extra grunt of the GTX280 will give it better longevity. So GTX280 unless you can't afford the extra...

Personally I'd want a GTX280 but that's just because I've been green since the Voodoo. The HD4870 would probably be a better bet, for the price and the relatively small real world performance difference, I couldn't in good conscience pay the extra £75 for the nVidia.
Oh come on its not like I didn't read that before! You have to agree the price is a lot closer than before. I guess I should go with the 4870. But keep your thoughts coming, I'm probably not the only one with this question.
GTX280 I also have been green since 3dfx I say GTX280 or new 55nm GTX280, IF ti comes out.. I sold my GTS512 2 months ago and waiting for a new GTX. For me is like 2 times powerful card (I play at 1920x1200, 24")
qft. Okay, it really is a good card for the price. It runs hot but it has a temp-controlled fan so that basically is ATI's decision.
Jeez I'd hate to see your text messages. Probably need MI6 to decode the them. WARHAMSTER is ROLLING ON THE FLOOR LAUGHING I've ordered the red one BY THE WAY from Amazon for £170 delivered. I'll use the money saved for beer and chocolate.
