Rant Stupid high street stores

I just want a cheap HDMI cable, how hard can that be? I'm not paying 40-****ing-quid for a 1M "GOLD OMG PLATED" BS because it's a DIGITAL connection and a £3 one will do.

Maplin and PC World are useless.

Hah, I know what you mean, I wanted to get an HDMI cable to test out if the TV worked better with one rather than component, went to Best Buy, 90$ for a 6ft HDMI cable.. Went to CompUSA, 85$ for 6ft, went to radioshack, 60$ for 6ft.. Insane. I stuck with component.

 

I'm guessing this is the same Maplin who sponsored the UK Championships? I see now how they can afford it.

because HDMI cables are so thin, multistranded and stupid, carrying 1080p over any kind of distance (not 1m i agree) can actually be an issue. in this case, the "digital is digital" adage is a bit broken, but mainly works (ish).

shock! the advice they give is generic and good!

i also have the £5 argos cable, actually. it's fine. we're talking about when you need to run a cable up to, say, 5-10m. then the quality of the cable actually does matter. (HDMI is a truly awful interconnect for high end AV installations. why oh why doesn't the connector lock into place, for one!?)

 

It's not usually an issue until you're using 15m+ cables or so, and even then a cheap shielded cable (as compared to a VERY cheap unshielded cable) will usually do the trick. Unless you're running an HDMI cable through a power plant, there's almost never a need for the premium cables, even if they are technically higher quality.

Do you not have markets down south? We have a stall selling AV stuff, phones, batteries, etc, has the cheap (but OK) Philex brand cables ebuyer and Play sell for under £5.

 

A few months ago I got a 1m HDMI cable with a DVI adaptor from Sainsburys for £6.99.

 

At the other end of the scale, how about Richer Sounds - £125!!

There was a TV gadget show on Chanel Five a few months ago and took one of the really cheap cables and one of the £125 monsters and plugged them into two identical set ups, placed then side by side in a Shopping mall and invited passers by to spot the difference. Would it be a surprise if I said that very few people could?

 

1's and 0's look the same to me no matter what cable i use.

£5 - job done. Ended up watching Shooter in 720p out of my notebook to TV
