"We're taking the boat to Dreamhack" (www.dreamhack.se - The worlds biggest LAN-party)

A boat? In the moding section? Wtf? Let me explain ;)

First of I want to say hi to everyone as this is my first post, I've had so much fun reading various project logs here and I hope you will enjoy mine as much as I've enjoyed all of yours!

Visiting a LAN is always fun, but some times it can be hard to find a place to put all your stuff. Previous years I've been inventing various shelves and constructions to solve this ever lasting problem. But this year I wanted to take it to the next level, making something extraordinary, so strange and crazy that you just had to stop and look at it. Bellow is an illustrative picture of the regular shelves that participants usually build.

One of these, but a crazier, funnier version with a pirate theme, (YARR) is what me and my first mate are aiming at. We are not talking about a table with a pirate flag but a whole boat with mast, canons and a fake parrot! If you have an idea that you think would fit our build, how crazy it may be, please tell us!

    The goal.

There are few limitations to this build and the wackier it gets, the better! We're even thinking about getting pirate costumes, just to make it more authentic! One thing to have in mind that we're not aiming for perfection but a fun mod, so lets get to work, YARR!

    The main table

My old shelf, a good foundation.

Removing the remains and starting with the legs.

    Getting there.

The table was way to unstable without placing a board in the front.

Not the finest work of art, but rustic! The pirate way ;)

    The boat hunt!

To find ourselves a sea worthy ship we surfed the world wide web and found this astonishing vessel.
I can already picture our enemies trembling with fear as we board them! The add says "Wooden boat for the small pond", they must have written it wrong as everyone can cleary see it's a mighty pirate ship!

In a far of place in a town (directly translated to English) called "uninhabited hight" we found this place, according to the add we were to find our yellow "pond boat" here.

Here's my first mate posing with whats to become a legend.

    Cutting and building

The boat is obviously to large to fit our table, so we had to "adjust" it. We also manages to talk a woman into helping us, somehow.

The captain (me) him self "adjusting" width :dremel:. In the middle of all the cutting my phone rings "Can I call you later? I'm cuting my boat into pieces." How many times will I have the opportunity to say that again in my lifetime?

My first mate is asking himself the question "What are we doing?"

Correct width, but not the right length.

So we had to cut a little more :dremel:

Mounting the boat to the table.

And as we had cut the boat into four pieces, we had to puzzle them together.

    In more then one place.

The woman (Sara) mumbles something about how stupid we are, but as we are pirates, women have no say! YARR!

    Some adjustments.

As we are going to paint it (yellow doesn't really say fearsome pirate) we had to fill in the gaps.

We have reached our first goal, a boat on a table!

    Decoration and details

At the event we will have seats in the middle, were everyone will be walking by, so the front of the boat will be fully visible to the participants (we can there for place a 19" TFT if we wish to display something in front).

As we have these exposed seats we want to make the most of it and add attention to details, this is where you can help! Ideas or suggestions are more then welcome and if the cost is not to exaggerated we might just make it reality.

The ideas and must haves so far:
    *Mast
    *Sail with light towards it
    *Canons
    *Interior lights (in the cabin)
    *Ornament in the front
    *Boat wheel
    *Ropes from the mast
    *Bowsprit (stick in the front)
    *Curtain (for the cabin)

And I just happen to have a 19" TFT lying around with a wall mounting kit, where shall we place this? And what are we to display?

These two ornaments where compulsory and where bought right away.
    [IMG][IMG]

We got to have lights so that we wont collide with other ships when the mist comes.

My happy first mate is making a holder for the sail.

We continued by attaching the boat wheel to our 2,3m (7,36 feet) long mast.

In the background you can see the sail mounted to the mast and our "front ornament" (I'm sure there is a name for it). Is this where we shall place our 19"?

If you could get away with it, I would have asked the lan organizer to remove the table so you could set up a series of boat shaped arcade booths. I was never a big fan of office chairs anyway. I'd rather have a recliner.

'Lol' at the animation and 'LMAO I LOVE IT!' at the boat

You seriously must be a mental case to do something like this... Welcome to the Sanctuary :)

You sawed that original boat in so much ways, I wouldnt call it a boat anymore what you have nailed to the table. With some pieces of wood, you could have made the same shape. Ahwell.... The decorations are very nice though.

get some dry ice (frozen C02) for some smokey effect, as for canons can you get some cheap plastic "cap Guns" kids toy gun that makes abang noise with a little puff of smoke, you could hook them up to on string and firen them allat once
