Scratch Build – Complete Cygnus X1.

I previously saw some of the mod but did not have time to go all the way through. Today I read through all of it. Great work, and congrats on the MOTM nomination. You are wiping the floor with the rest of us. Next time try reducing the quality of the work so the rest stand a chance too please.

 

Grats on the MoTM nomination. Good job on leading really far. The whole case is coming up great so far!

The chassis supports were the part of the case that I was
least concerned about but they have turned out to be the
most difficult so far.

I started off using the cardboard model to cut the front support
from 3mm plate, but as soon as it was cut and filed, instead of
bending it up, it was stood on end.....



This led me down a path completely different from where I started out,
but after much time wasting...........













It wasn't until a work buddy turned some pads for me that things got
back on track.
These are 45mm in diameter and 20mm high.



4mm hole right through and a 10mm hole in the base to accept the head
of a cap screw.



So full circle back to the original idea.







It is proving to be extremely difficult to get the bends correct. I've posted some
pic's here to show you how it can look but it's not finished and needs further attention
to the bends.









Once the front supports are finished, the back ones should be much easier as it
doesn't have to project forward.

I should also add that I'm still not sure if I like the way this looks, but after the rear is
made I can get a better idea.
What do you think?
Are the pads OK, or should I dump them and go for something like in the first pic?

I actually like both your solutions for the 'feet'. The first one is maybe a bit more in line with the rest of the case, but the round feet work as well.

 

I think these fit the whole scheme of this build. Very nice and shows well in the pictures. Not too wide and not too tall. Looking good.

Looks very cool. I think the first design fits with the mod better but the second feet look awesome and aren't that far away from the rest of the mod.

Thanks jokkos., Yes, more angular suits the rest of the chassis. I think I may make
something more chunky and angular and then attach the pads to this.

Thanks Dark3., A shell will be made that will cover the whole chassis and the
sides will sit just a few mm above the pads.
The sides will be lower than the chassis. There will be vents in the sides as well
as running from the lower front all the way up and over the top to the back. This
may sound horrible but I can't show you a picture of it because it is only in my
head (and I can't draw to save my life ), but I think it looks good and I'll start making it soon.

 

I like the turned feet, and felt the first idea looked too thin, and not 'solid' enough. Your mod gives off that solid vibe, and needs a bit of chunky feet, IMHO. A combination of the bends from your original idea, on that alu mixed with the feet, and then 'lowered' with the sides (cover) on will look pretty dope, I think

I like the bracket that you made for the last design with the pads.
I think it would look nice with that bracket and maybe a different shape of pad underneath. Maybe something like the same shape as the piece that attaches to the pads themselves (The ?triangular? shaped pieces). Could even make it out of several pieces of 3mm alu that gradually get bigger until you reach the desired height.

I really like the look of this mod. Has given me even more ideas that I cannot act on.
Keep it up will be watching with anticipation.

I agree with some (most) of you in that a combination of the pads and a more
angular arrangement for the supports would be best. Although the solution with
the bent 3mm is sound strength-wise, it just doesn't look that way, it looks too
flimsy. So see what I've decided to do below.

To make sure the supports are strong and also look that way I went and bought
some 25x12mm bar.



This is too high as is, so some material has to be cut away to make room for the pad.
Also a small angle is cut on top for looks.



And cut.





And filed. But it's not filed all the way because I want to have a look at it on the
chassis and the second front support needs to be made so the two can be held
together in the vice and filed identically.



And I like it, though it's hard to tell with just one.









There is no doubting it's strength now.
So I'll go and make the rest. The rear should be easy as it's just one
bar right the way across.

out before work and made the second one.





And I'm very pleased with this solution.
