Not sure if they're all the same, but it's worth noting the bike to work scheme i was on had a £1000 cap on the price (you could get a more expensive bike, but you had to pay any extra yourself)

 

I am searching for an all around nice cheapish bike with gears and without suspension, light frame preferably.

edit: I am thinking of riding it to uni, but there is a part that is about 1km of 15% inclination.

 

Road bike or light hybrid then.

 

Had a nice long ride on the bike yesterday. It feels really stable and rails corners like nothing I've ever ridden. Coming from a hard tail it seems to give just the right amount of squish without being bouncy. I tried a 2 or 3 foot drop off and it coped fine without bottoming out. On the trails it feels better with the pikes wound down to 120 or less. 140mm will be purely for the big bumpy downhills.

The Elixirs are feeling really good after just one ride. The power is great and they're far better modulated compared to the Juicys

 

Maybe have a look 2nd hand? If you cant find something which matches exactly what you want, maybe look at how much change it how you want after youve bought it.

Last year I bought a Kona Explosif, worth about £1200+ at time of release and I got for £200 at 2 years old needed a little work mainly on brakes but apart from that was spot on, came with a new set of tyres as well, but I'd rather spend that much on a solid frame and good base than £1200 on one new tbh, but im not a big rider and can see why people do spend big money.

 

Woohoo... finally got my hybrid bike today. Proud new owner of a 2009 Giant CRS 4.0... I won't post any pics because it's not that special really

Now I need some lights and a security lock... any suggestions? Just looking through Evans Cycles and picked this and this?

 

Hopefully those cat's eye lights will be better than the ones I had which would barely light up the tire.

 

Well, winter is almost upon us, and I've had to abandon many of my former steeds due to several issues. Today, I bought myself a new winter beater thats a little above the norm.

something seems wrong about calling a bike with any carbon fiber components, even if it is just hadlebars, a "beater".

nice bike though, i'd love a rigid singlespeed. and those tires look really fun.

 

Possibly, I've only just realised the tone of my post was a little strong (unintentionally).

 

@Ramble: It's the only place close to where I live that isn't covered with bums and crack junkies, so it seemed like the perfect place to snap a couple shots. Plus I've always found graveyards... calming.

@supertoad: I call it a beater because it's going to get destroyed this winter (1+hour of riding per day), and I only put $600 into it. Rides nice though, but is going to take a bit of getting used to, as it feels so much like a trials bike that it just makes me want to lurch! The steering is so tight that whenever you enter a turn at speed, the bike just pulls extremely strongly into the turn, to the point where you're fighting the bars to keep the wheel from going a full 90 degrees into the turn.

 

Just bought myself a set of rollers so i don't have to go out in winter, looking forward to falling off them.

 

So, for all my colour-coordinated bit-brethren: on my new fisher, with it's current black and gray colour theme, what would be the best colour to go with in regards to stem/bar/skewers/pedals? I'm thinking of something kind of funky, like purple, or green, but don't think it'll suit the feel of the bike. I wouldn't mind white, but think it'll get dirty in winter far too fast.

Thoughts?

 

Black and grey... If white's out, red? Yellow? Something bright and light, I'd say.

 

Red - goes best with black.

 

Well the cracked rib healed up in little over two weeks which was great. Sadly, and after a great day's riding down at UK Bike Park including hitting the road-gap, I got all messy on the 30ft table-top and broke my knee.

Still, mean I've got plenty of time to rebuild the Supreme after it got caked in crap that day. Just sent off for a quote from ArgosCycles to have it resprayed. I got the 09 Saints for it and, as Jamie said, they're gorgeous. Add to that some Avid Code brakes which are spot on (surprisingly so considering how crap Juicys are) and the Supreme is a nice ride.

Most shops will offer the cyclescheme or similar (Evans have their own interpretation) but they're all essentially the same thing, offer the same benefit, and go through the same government channels. It's very easy to do and even if your company doesn't currently offer, it comes with minimal implementation overhead so just pester your accounts dept.

I bought my Cove through the scheme and whilst it cost most than the scheme offers (£1K limit, mine was more like £2.5K) the shop does you tax-free on the first grand and you make up the rest.

 

Finally decided to get my ass out of the house and go for a ride again last week. It's been about 2-3 years
Borrowed my dads Specialised, which is probably about 15 years old. Turns out the gears don't work too well. I had a good time though just riding through a forest, makes me want to get my bike back and fixed (or maybe a new one).
And then it goes and freezes over everywhere! Doesn't look like the best conditions to be going out in.

Looks good, nice simple winter bike. I was considering the same thing for work\short rides, it's a bit silly using a couple of grands of MTB for commuting to work

Those Bonti forks are nice but straight bladed and your head angle looks quite steep, which is the likely cause of the sharp steering.
