Because your situation applies to everyone here?
I invest a lot of my overdraft and extra money into bikes, bike bits, bike clothing, food, etc. because:
    a) I really enjoy riding it
    b) I ride it a lot, so this investment makes sense
    c) I (will) race with it, so it makes even more sense if I want to win.

A folding bike is meant for commuters really, hence it won't be as strong or as good at handling trails as a mountain bike.

You're a gamer, is there really that much difference between a 4870 and a 4850? Why bother spending the extra money?

I would have said a proper mountain bike compared to a folding bike was more of a 4870 compared to intel integrated graphics, there's a huge leap in quality.

Folding = heavy and weak. Not a good recipe for off-road

I never said my situation applies to everyone. I have no idea where you're getting that from. I think someone may be getting a bit snippy, lol

I was just defending myself. Bikes aren't going to be a hobby for me. Just a way to enjoy the outdoors and get exercise. I'm not looking for a bike where I buy the frame only and build it myself. I'm looking for a mountain bike, preferably folding. However, it seems like everyone has a common belief that folding bikes don't perform well for the price. So what would be a decent mountain bike you guys would suggest?

I am a gamer, not a PC gamer however. So to me, nope. No difference and I wouldn't spend the extra money.

Here's a review of the bike I'm looking at

Ok, that's not realistically going to happen. :) See below...

Seriously, they don't and won't. In order for it to stand up to mountain use it has got to be strong. Placing folds/joints in the frame will only serve to weaken it. Or, if there are no joints, you're going to end up with a completely strange, geometry killing design that probably has a massive tube somewhere. You can make it strong via two methods - either throw insane amounts of money at the problem, or make it heavy. Neither of these are things are desirable traits :)
Case in point, you linked a Montagueco bike earlier in the thread - that thing is 29lbs. That's damn heavy for what it is and it's also pretty shitty.

Just spend $800 (assuming that's your budget, going on the thing you linked earlier) on a hardtail from any of the big manufacturers - Spesh, Giant, Trek, whatever. Even if it's not going to be a hobby and you aren't a discerning rider, you'll still notice the difference.

When you take the wheels off a bike, they're just as easily portable as a folding bike anyway.

    HTH :)

    Haha well thanks RTT.

    I'll look at those brands.

    Any specific model?

$800 would be the max I want to pay on a bike, anything less is fine.

You'd be best visiting your Friendly Local Bike Shop to have a browse and actually sit on a bike or two. It won't give you a complete picture since they're unlikely to have a proper off-road test track but it may help. Grab a friend who knows bikes if possible.

I'd again recommend a Specialised Rockhopper Disc as a good entry-level bike. It's under your budget leaving you cash for a helmet (necessity, please don't think otherwise), gloves (near-necessity, trust me) and any other bits and pieces you think may be helpful. Put the rest into the upgrade kitty :p

Mmkay, there's a few bike shops in a city nearby. I'll keep that in mind.

    Thanks for the help guys.

That folding bike looks utterly rubbish. If it didn't fold it would cost no more than about £150 ($200?). Plus when folded it's no smaller than a normal bike without the wheels, and you have to take the front wheel off anyway. It's certainly not a mountain bike, and it's a complete waste of money IMO. However, since you've asked the question and ignored everyone else's responses, I will just assume that you're going to ignore this one too.

What I will say, though, is that my mountain bike easily fits inside my VW Polo (with the seats down + wheels off). Having said that, I usually end up using the rack since it's much easier and keeps the inside of the car clean etc.

I haven't been out in a week - that's an excessive holiday for me.

    Folders are for sissies.

I have a mini and a fairly big framed MTB with the wheels off, seat post out and handlebars off it goes in with very little coaxing

I'm sure you, being American, have a car with more space available.

I haven't actually sent it back yet. I've got my finals in a week and to be honest I'm happy to have got rid of that particular distraction! I'll let you know when I get around to sorting it in the next month or so :)

Odd choice of bike for free riding :p

I got my old bike (05 Enduro) nicked recently and by some miracle the police found it... Ironically though, they have now had it longer than the thief did! I'm getting sick of walking to work. My dainty cyclists feet are starting to complain! :D
