News Black Mesa Source mod coming late this year

The modding group behind the massively anticipated Black Mesa Mod has put a new date on its release; later this year.

 

Will it be released on Steam and if so, at what cost?

 

Probably for the price the original HL, around 50 euro..

 

I shouldn't think they'd be allowed to charge for it. Otherwise they'd be profiting from copyright infringement, unless they made a deal with Valve.

 

IIRC they have the support of Valve and are allowed to copy the original game, but cannot and will not charge for it. I imagine it'll quickly be featured on Steam though.

 

funny thing I was just researching this mod last nite and watching the first trailer on utube. from what I read on the black mesa web site it wil be released in the 6 to 10 month time frame of 2009.
also it wil be a free mod that can be downloaded from most gaming sites and stored in your steam
mod folder. I got hooked on half life and all the follow ups and can't wait to see how they did with this.

 

I've been dieing for this for a long time, I'm glad we're reaching somewhere... now the only project I'm waiting for is Infinity-Universe, the procedural space MMO.

 

I replayed the steam version, and was a bit miffed that mostly the water effects were better....
This will bring back a superbly written game back to people who never got to play it first time round

 

Well people need HL2 for it to run anyway, so it's not like Valve doesn't benefit. Hopefully the mod is fantastically awesome and Valve hires some of the team, they already have Valve development times learned

 

I've been waiting for this one for soooo long, I just hope its worth the wait. It certainly promises a great deal more than Source Half Life and from what I've seen it looks fantastic.

I shall wait as patiently as I can.

PS Where the feckkk is HL2 Ep3?

 

They will DEFINITELY be getting my money for this. Even if it is free.

 

Been following since the beginning. It will be nice to see it finally released.

Yes, they are using the Orange Box engine, and as for HL2:Ep3, in Valve Time I'd estimate early next year?

ya I heard this was going to be a free mod, sorta an anniversary kinda of like concept. But I suppose if I have to play then well it will still be worth it ^__^

Of course its free, just like every other HL2 mod out there. If they tried to sell it they'd be sued, and if Valve had purchased the group we probably would've heard about it.

Personaly, I can't wait. Soon after they should start work on OP (Opposing Force).

 

Garry's Mod is a source mod (requires a full source game to run) that's sold via Steam so it wouldn't necessarily be a huge leap to get there, I agree that they probably wouldn't try to sell it though (particularly since it's a reimagining of a game they don't own the rights to).

My point was that being a mod doesn't necessarily mean a game is free, though in this case you're most likely correct

 

when it is an "expansion" type of a mod, they are free (portal: prelude, etc). because the people who make them don't own the rights to sell them because of VALVe's copyrights.

Garry's mod is a totally different type of mod, while being built on the source engine, it is a new game entirely.
