Steam is offering Rome: Total War Gold free when you pre-order.

Steam, while a great idea is a pure RIP OFF. I mean how can they charge MORE for a game with no box, no sales overheads....its madness.

But I cannot wait for this game. I really cant...I have not played a TW game since ROME and I am useless at the manual battles so my TACTIC is outnumber them 3:1 and auto battle.....Sad I know!

No overheads? What about all those servers they have to run for game distribution, multiplayer, friends and other features on offer? Those games don't just magic themselves onto your hard drives from the ether. It's not a whole lot behind xbox live (if at all) and that's a premium service. Boxes and DVDs cost pennies to produce anyway.

    Greetings!

Veles, are you aware of the € price increase on Steam?

    Empire: Total War costs 49,99€/44,10£.
    Play.com sells it for 38,99€/34,41£.

    10£ more for what?

Yeah that is true, the steam price for TW is pretty ludicrous, other things they're not so bad on, it's just some new releases tend to be stupidly expensive.

    Greetings!
The price for TW is similar to other games, Steam/Valve is using a US$1=1€ exchange rate for two months now.
The only games worth getting through Steam are the ones on the weekend deals.

Its even more ridiculous the Special Forces Edition of ETW.
Steam wants 59,99€/53,01£, with no package bundle.
Play.com wants 45,49€/40,20£, with the following package:

    13£ more for less value.

Pre-ordered the special forces edition from game today with the Deaths Head Hussar elite unit (I hate pre-order bonuses, especially when they're different from different retailers :(). Downloading the demo now too.

Demo is pretty awesome. Game looks GREAT! Running at at 1920x1200, everything all the way up, 8xAA, 16xASF. Beautiful! So far the coolest thing was watching my sailors board an enemy ship. They tossed ropes, went across shooting their muskets.....sooooo awesome :D Definately a game I'll be picking up :)

Anyone else think it loaded horrifically slowly or is it just my PC being ****?

It sped up for me the 2nd time I opened it. The first time it took forever, but after that it was OK.

Aside from the truly abysmal loading times, the game's really excellent.

The load times though, Jesus. Waiting 2 minutes for it to get to the main menu, then a further 2 minutes to load anything else, that's if it doesn't crash half way through. Useless. That's the kind of crap that makes a game unplayable.

My computer's getting more and more into piece of s**t's-ville these days, but yeah - the loading time was ridiculous. For both the main menu and the levels themselves.
