Films B-Movie Recommendations

2 is a remake of 1 (little bit funnier, but still a horror and still Bruce Campbell on his own in a cabin for 90% of it). 3 follows on from the end of 2 and is a completely different style of film a bit more slapstick (as seen in the graveyard scene where Ash awakens the dead by not remembering the words correctly).

And it was on the Sci-Fi channel again last Friday.

Try "Fiend Without a Face" for some classic 50's Sci-Fi, you could also take a look at the Ray Harryhausen films from the 50's & 60's.

I would also recommend the "Thing From Another World", its based on the same short story as the John Carpenter version of "The Thing" but as the budget (and more likely the effects technology as well) was limited its a fairly different telling of the story. Although there is one pretty spectacular bit of stunt work involving the creature, a can of pariffin (kerosene for the US) and a flare gun.

This Island Earth is another pretty good slice of 50's Sci-Fi, it was unfairly lampooned on MST3K in my opinion as its regarded as a classic of its time.

If you like Star Trek, the classic series, have a look at Raumpatrouille (1966), its surprisingly slick German counterpart. See a trailer below. Ignore the garish colours added by whoever posted the clip --the original was broadcast in black-and-white.



It was, in certain matters ahead of Star Trek. Females had a much more prominent role than yeoman or communiations officer: Raumpatrouille already featured a female starship captain (on another ship) and a female engineer. The ship, Orion had a big viewing screen like the Enterprise but it also featured Heads Up Display and tactical info. It had a glass table that featured another viewing screen with the same.

Plots were not as philosophical as they could get in Star Trek, with much of it involving the ongoing conflict with the "Frogs" (an acronym nickname), of which little was known. It never became clear why they were hostile, and all attempts to communicate failed. Their ships were smaller and considerably faster. The few times they are seen by the crew directly they appear as vague, shimmering forms suggesting that they do not quite live on the same physical plane.

If the foreign language does not put you off, then also try Ikari XB-1 (1963), an athmospheric and really rather good Sci-Fi movie from Czechoslovakia.

I just remembered one I've always had a soft spot for, its a made for TV movie but I reckon its pretty good, its called The Car.

Check it on IMDB if your curious, it was ripped off in a Futurama episode (curse of the were-car I think).
