Hardware OCZ ModXStream Pro 500W PSU

500W, modular, not too expensive - an ideal partner to a cost efficient system? We put OCZ's revamped ModXStream Pro to the reviewers block to see if it'll hold up to our barrage of tests in order to evaluate noise, efficiency and power quality.

 

I managed to bag the 600W version of that Modxstream Pro for £57 before Christmas. (Before the pound dropped and everything seemed to rocket up in price.) Its a fantastic piece of kit.

 

i think i'd put a extra tenner down for the 500W Coolermaster Silent Pro Whisper Quiet Modular PSU

 

Also very good! Well, at least the 700W is (I use it at home).

Fair enough, our 500W survived an extended full load test and it was still cool inside. Ive thrown it at a few systems and it works fine. I said in the review I can't vouch for the capacitor choice so whether that plays into the future is something to certainly question, but not something we can evaluate.

 

Regarding the the PSU's ability to cope with heat. It is ironic that given the budget price of this item, the typical cases this will go into, will probably have fewer fans and less sophisticated cooling, than the 700W model that originally failed Hardocp's high heat test.

How about a review of the SilentXStream series(600w)? I think I remember reading that the two use different pcb's.

 

I disagree - fans cost next to nothing, and look at the very popular Antec 300 which is under £50. The point is for 500W there's typically components being used with far less heat than 700W. A 500W is "low end" - 4830/4850 with dual core, but 700W and you're looking at basic multi-GPU or a GTX 260/280/4870/90 end of the market.

Simply it did the job with everything we threw at it here.

 

Fair point, and I suppose people buying truly rubbish cases, would not even bother with a £60 PSU, but probably settle for a £25 no name.

 

Ya-huh. 500W is an educated "low end", and yea I will freely admit we don't test the heat chamber effect unfortunately, but the fact it sits at 30-40C inside, which is one of the coolest PSUs we've seen, with 85-105C caps means the 500W *should* cope with a bit of system temp.

 

Time for Dennis Publishing to cough up for a sauna, important vital for heat and humudity testing

 

Do OCZ use PC Power & Cooling units? Like Corsair uses Seasonic in their HXxxx units?

 

Only in the EliteXStream products.

The ModX, Fatal1ty and GameX are FSP or someone I think.

 

I bought this PSU recently to power my E5200/5850 gaming rig. I searched for the OEM and found out that this ModX is made by Sirtec
