Scratch Build – Complete Cygnus X1.

I suppose you've read up enough to know that rubbing the wood shavings over the wood gives it a very nice-looking finish? Try it if you haven't.

 

I'm still unhappy with your choice of covering the astounding frame-work you did there, but the curved surface of the Jarrah will look very decent aswell.

Nice job there with the wood.

I've thought about this very carefully, and I think I can honestly say that this project log is the only one that has physically made me on a regular basis.

@lola, I think it's a bit late to start a video.



Before work on the outside of the side panel is started I wanted to see what could
be done about the hinges.
If it's possible to make each side from one piece then this piece of 40x12mm bar will
be used. It fits perfectly, but here it's just sitting on top of the back panel parts.
I spoke to a colleague at work and he seems to think that the holes can be drilled into
the projections (when cut out) by welding a drill bit to some rod. It sounds very iffy
to me but he's the expert.





Anyway, onto the outside of the shell. I'll start off using this thing to remove the bulk
of the material. It's a 100mm disc with embedded carbide flakes, it may look like a rough
tool but in fact is not very aggressive and removes little if not forced.





It was one of those days when the sun was out for 15mins and then it rains for 15mins
so I had to keep stopping to cover up.



And that's about all that can be done with this tool but you can see a great deal of material
has been removed and the double curve is visible along with the bumps for the feet.





So now the shape/s need to be fine tuned with some chisels. A great deal of material still
needs to be removed so the shape is not as pronounced as it will be when finished. It will
curve and taper from back to front and from bottom to top.



Particularly the bottom edge needs defining and the area behind the front bump needs
to be cleared.







And then I need to move all the way up the panel to refine the shape, but it's my turn
to cook dinner tonight so time to pack up.



I'd say several kilo's of wood have been removed already, will weigh it again when it's
finished.

I was a bit worried when you decided to cover that B-E-A-utiful frame with wood, now all my doubts have disappeared. Excellent work mate, your wood work skills are just as good as your metal work skills, keep it up.

I don't know, I've just spent four hours on this and it doesn't look much different.

Because of the deep gouges made by the cutting disc it's difficult to see what's going on,
so I started to sand it down to get a better look. Then I could see where adjustments need
to be made. Too much material needed to be removed from behind the front bump so the
cutting disc was used again.





It takes a lot of sanding to get rid of the cutter marks.



The profile on the top and the bottom edge is good.





But the back edge is uneven and the front edge is too thick and the curve too pronounced.



So more work to do on this. In fact even more faults became apparent when I photographed the panel
against the chassis. Here you can see that the front bump is not straight in profile and also goes on for
far too long, that is it should be more of a "bump", also the area behind the top of this bump still too high.

 

All I can say is WOW!

 

All that and he's nitpicking about marks from the cutter.
